Right now I'm pursuing what I really love, Maybe 17 years old me, never would have thought about being in place in which i am right now, and I am really really happy being whom I am. So Thank you to Earth for giving me this confidence, Always loving and supporting you
Again this interview made me realise why i always look upto him, The inspiration he gives, To me he always taught me to be myself, society will say anything ...but I should be proud of what am I, i should be confident and do what I love. And I'm happy I got to know about Earth
[Part 3/5]
Talk about being feminine in BL series industry
"It's ironic that people watch BL series, but not wanting an actual gay person - especially a feminine one, like me - to be an actor. Everytime I have a new series, I would be judged even before it being aired. I can still recall the feeling and reason why I decided to speak up about this - because it's not fair. If an LGBTQ+ person were to portray an LGBTQ+ character, he or she shouldn't even be criticized. Don't forget, the series I am on is a series about gays. It's so strange that while we are in the industry that was built on and publicized gay people's cultures and romances for entertainment, when people in the community become the actors, they are faced with adversities rather than support."
"I welcome feedback. If you want to comment on my acting, please feel free to do so. I don't have hard feelings. However, some people criticized me and my gender without having watched my work yet. I have seen comments such as
"I love the BL series. I used to like him, but when he came out and became 'himself', I am not into him anymore. I dislike him. I only watch a 'gay' who is masculine." It really sounds harsh, doesn't it? Some people also try to remove the word "gay" from the equation - seeing it (BL couple) as "a (straight) guy loving another (straight) guy". Basically, they are anti-ing the word "gay" - which is not right. And, it's not just me that have been treated this way - others also. Then, when I saw that happened, I was like "whoa, that's disheartening. Is it really that bad to be who I am? They haven't been kind enough to see whether or not I can act." So, at the time where it seems like the society is more accepting about gender diversity, the mindset of many people are still not that accepting"
"Even though I am with the company allows me to be myself, being myself (out in the open) comes with many trade-offs. For example, for some roles, some people judge me from the surface or from past perception. They haven't even looked at my skills or what I can do. I believe that the word "actor" means, regardless of the role I have been assigned, I have to be that character. However, it turned out that, when my personal character is clear - that I am feminine, I was deemed "incapable", and that is very disheartening. Some BL series audiences seem to be able to distinguish between real-life human beings and a character. I am quite confident that I put a lot of effort in doing my homework to understand and portray the character - not just putting my personal self into the character I am portraying. I know what I'm doing"
"Having experienced that, I used to question: if I keep a neutral "look" - not a very clear personal character, I may be offered more variety of roles. But because of this (being who I am), the types of roles that were offered to me are quite limited. It may be because the marketing team, the casting agency, or the producer often choose roles that are close to me - which I understand. However, if you ask me if I can play other roles that are quite distinct from my look, I'd say I really can. I would love to play Action roles, but they have issues with my image. Or, if I am offered a masculine role - having me paired with a girl, I would be keen to try. I am ready for many other types of roles and to step out of my comfort zone because, in other countries, LGBTQ+ actors also have been offered diverse roles and characters that are quite different from their personal lives."
At first, I planned to do partial translation of #cooheart@cooheartt 's interview because there are some interesting points yet been captured by IG photos. Then, I reread this, and decided to just do all - to help this Pretty Girl to send the messages for our community. 💛
