Today, Thiruvananthapuram bade farewell to one of its bravest sons. Rajesh, whose heroic final act on the Tejasvi River has moved all of Kerala, was brought home and cremated, mourned by family, friends, and the countless people whose lives he touched and, in so many cases, saved.

I knew Rajesh personally and saw first hand the energy, warmth, and utter selflessness he brought to everything he did. The man who handed his own life jacket to a stranger in raging floodwaters was the same man who saved many lives in the 2018 floods and who rushed to Wayanad after the 2024 landslides, always ready to put himself at risk for others.

He asked nothing for himself in life. In death, we owe him this much: that his wife Lakshmi and his children are not left to face the future alone. I urge the government to extend every possible support to his family, and I will do all I can from my side as well.

Farewell, Rajesh. Your courage will outlive us all. Om Shanti.

This is Aron Löwi, a 62-year-old Polish Jewish merchant from the small town of Zator. A husband, a neighbor, a man with a name, a family, and a life of his own.

On March 5, 1942, that life was brutally stripped away.

Upon arriving at Auschwitz, Aron was no longer seen as a human being. He became prisoner number 26406.

The haunting mugshots taken that day show a man already bruised, starved, and hollow-eyed, clear evidence of abuse even before he entered the camp. On his striped uniform were the badges of Nazi classification: a yellow star marking him as Jewish, and a red triangle labeling him a political prisoner.

Aron Löwi survived just five days in Auschwitz. He arrived on March 5 and was dead by March 10, 1942. His cause of death was never officially recorded, just one of millions dismissed as “unfit for labor.”

In five short days, the Nazis tried to erase a lifetime.

But they failed.

His face, his photograph, and his prisoner number remain. Every time we speak his name, we push back against the oblivion they sought to impose.

To remember even one is to resist forgetting them all.

ಯಾವುದೇ ಒಂದು ಗಂಭೀರವಾದ ಮತ್ತು ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯ ಸುಧಾರಣೆಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಎಂದಿಗೂ ಅರ್ಥಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಚರ್ಚೆ ನಡೆಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಬದಲಿಗೆ, ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಪಕ್ಷಗಳ ಪರ-ವಿರೋಧದ ಗದ್ದಲವೇ ಮುನ್ನೆಲೆಗೆ ಬಂದು, ಅಂತಿಮವಾಗಿ ನಾವು ಯಾವ ಮೂಲಭೂತ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಧ್ವನಿ ಎತ್ತುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇವೆ ಅನ್ನುವುದೇ ಮರೆತುಹೋಗಿ ಆ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ವಿಚಾರವು ಮೂಲೆಗುಂಪಾಗಿಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ.

ಆಳುವ ಸರ್ಕಾರಗಳಿಗೆ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಜಕೀಯ ನಾಯಕರಿಗೆ ವಾಸ್ತವವಾಗಿ ಬೇಕಾಗಿರುವುದೂ ಕೂಡ ಇದೇ ತಾನೇ? ಜನರನ್ನು ದಿಕ್ಕು ತಪ್ಪಿಸುವುದು ಅವರ ಅಜೆಂಡಾ ಆಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ.

ಇಡೀ ಜಗತ್ತು ಆರ್ಟಿಫಿಶಿಯಲ್ ಇಂಟೆಲಿಜೆನ್ಸ್ (AI) ಕ್ರಾಂತಿ, ಬಾಹ್ಯಾಕಾಶ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನ ಮತ್ತು ಹೊಸ ಹೊಸ ಅನ್ವೇಷಣೆಗಳ ಕಡೆಗೆ ಹೆಜ್ಜೆ ಹಾಕಿ ಮುಂದುವರಿಯುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ, ನಾವು ಮಾತ್ರ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಒಂದು ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಾತ್ಮಕ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ಅಥವಾ ನೇಮಕಾತಿಯನ್ನು ಯಾವುದೇ ಭ್ರಷ್ಟಾಚಾರವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ನಡೆಸುವುದು ಹೇಗೆ ಎಂಬ ಪ್ರಾಥಮಿಕ ಹಂತದ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆಗಳಲ್ಲೇ ಸಿಲುಕಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಮುಂದುವರಿದ ದೇಶಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ಒಟ್ಟು ದೇಶೀಯ ಉತ್ಪನ್ನದ (GDP) ಮತ್ತು ಆದಾಯದ ಬಹುಪಾಲು ಹಣವನ್ನು ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಂಶೋಧನೆಗೆ (R&D) ಮೀಸಲಿಡುತ್ತವೆ. ಆದರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಪ್ರಮಾಣದಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಲಾಭಕೋರ 'ಬಿಸಿನೆಸ್' ಆಗಿ ಬದಲಾವಣೆ ಆಗಿದೆ.

ಸಮಾಜವನ್ನು ತಿದ್ದಬೇಕಾದ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂದು ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಪಕ್ಷಗಳ ನಾಯಕರು ಕೋಟಿ ಕೋಟಿ ಹಣ ಹೂಡಿಕೆ ಮಾಡಿ ದೊಡ್ಡ ಸಾಮ್ರಾಜ್ಯಗಳನ್ನೇ ಕಟ್ಟಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಇದರ ನೇರ ಪರಿಣಾಮವಾಗಿ, ಬಡವರ ಮತ್ತು ಮಧ್ಯಮ ವರ್ಗದವರ ಆಧಾರಸ್ತಂಭವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಸರ್ಕಾರಿ ಶಾಲೆಗಳು ಇಂದು ಹಂತ ಹಂತವಾಗಿ ಮುಚ್ಚಿಹೋಗುತ್ತಿವೆ.

ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಹೀಗೆಯೇ ಮುಂದುವರೆದರೆ, ಮುಂದಿನ 10-15 ವರ್ಷಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇಡೀ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣವಾಗಿ ಖಾಸಗೀಕರಣಗೊಂಡು, ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನರಿಗೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ಮರೀಚಿಕೆಯಾಗಲಿದೆ.

ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಇಡೀ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಆಮೂಲಾಗ್ರ ಬದಲಾವಣೆ (Radical Overhaul) ಆಗಬೇಕಿದೆ. ಸದ್ಯದ ವಾಸ್ತವಿಕ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿಗೆ ತಕ್ಕಂತೆ, ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವ ಜಾಗತಿಕ ತಂತ್ರಜ್ಞಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತು ಉದ್ಯೋಗ ಮಾರುಕಟ್ಟೆಗೆ ಹೊಂದಿಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವಂತಹ ಪ್ರಾಯೋಗಿಕ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯು ಹೊಸದಾಗಿ ರೂಪುಗೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕಾದ ತುರ್ತು ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯತೆ ನಮಗಿದೆ.

ಆದರೆ, ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಆಗ್ತಾ ಇರೋದೇ ಬೇರೆ? ಕೇವಲ ಕಾಗದದ ಮೇಲೆ ನೀತಿಗಳು ಬದಲಾಗುತ್ತವೆಯೇ ಹೊರತು, ಆಳವಾದ ಮೂಲಭೂತ ಚಿಂತನೆಯಾಗಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ಭವಿಷ್ಯದ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಕೋನವಾಗಲಿ ಯಾರಲ್ಲೂ ಕಾಣುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಡಿಗ್ರಿಗಳಿಂದ ಕೇವಲ ಕಾಗದದ ತುಂಡುಗಳು ಸಿಗುತ್ತವೆಯೇ ಹೊರತು ಸ್ಪರ್ಧಾತ್ಮಕ ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೆ ಬೇಕಾದ ನೈಜ ಕೌಶಲ್ಯ ಸಿಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಈ ಧೋರಣೆ ಬದಲಾಗದಿದ್ದರೆ ನಾವೆಂದಿಗೂ ಜಾಗತಿಕ ಮಟ್ಟದಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಂಚೂಣಿಗೆ ಬರಲು ಸಾಧ್ಯವಿಲ್ಲ.

ಈ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಗಂಭೀರ ವಿಷಯಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕವಾಗಿ, ಸದನದಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಬೀದಿಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಚರ್ಚೆ ಆಗಲೇಬೇಕು. ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಮುಖವಾಡಗಳನ್ನು ಕಳಚಿಟ್ಟು, ಒಟ್ಟಾರೆ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ದೊಡ್ಡ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿ (Educational Revolution) ಆಗಲೇಬೇಕಾದ ಕಾಲಘಟ್ಟವಿದು.

ಸರ್ಕಾರಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯ ಚುಕ್ಕಾಣಿ ಹಿಡಿದವರು ಕೇವಲ ರಾಜಕೀಯ ಲೆಕ್ಕಾಚಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು, ಮುಂದಿನ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಯ ಭವಿಷ್ಯದ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ಯೋಚಿಸುವ ಕಾಲ ಈಗ ಬಂದಿದೆ.
ಆದರೆ ಇದು ಆಗುವ ಯಾವುದೇ ಲಕ್ಷಣ ಕಾಣ್ತಾ ಇಲ್ಲ.
