During Amorim’s tenure, a lot of people fell under the spell and blindly followed the dubious gospel of United’s former coach, making unhinged claims about Mainoo’s effort, fitness, abilities.

And then there were the rage-baiting pundits and podcasters, making a living out of making a beating, trying to stay relevant by trying to make a youngster stay down. Because he is world class and they are not.

Back then, I got into countless debates, arguing that it was never a question of quality or effort; rather, it was a question of tactical context, role, teammates, chemistry, platforming.

The point is so simple that it sounds downright trivial: when assessing individuals in a collective sport, be mindful of the collective in which the individual is being assessed.

In other words, if you want Mainoo to run up and down the pitch like a wild zombie on ecstasy, or ping long passes that he knows will be unsuccessful, but are being pinning for the sole sake of winning 2nd balls, you are asking Mainoo to cease being Mainoo.

And Mainoo is only good at being Mainoo. Asking him to become something else entirely means you are likely better off with someone else entirely.

A good coach recognizes the best tools at his disposal; attemps to marry his ideology with the tools; develops the team for both. It seems like Mainoo finally has that context at United.
