🚨NEW: A 55-year-old man died after twice calling 999, only to be told by call handlers an ambulance would not be sent for him and was instead told to wait for a callback.

Brian Hurton had an aortic dissection, when a tear opens up in the body's main artery, and told call handlers that he was losing his breath.

An hour and 12 minutes after his first call a clinician called him back, but it was too late.

An ambulance was not dispatched until 3 hours and 30 minutes after his first call to 999.

One of the strangest things about visiting Singapore is how little police presence there is. It has a reputation as a strict "police state" but you can go days without seeing a single officer.

The difference is cultural. Many people view fare evasion the same as not paying a tab at a restaurant, and they are raised to view that as unacceptable no matter their income or social status.

There's a very high level of social trust, and that shared expectation does much of the work that most places would require constant and expensive policing to achieve.

When you create an orderly society and high trust population you don't need to spend ridiculous amounts on enforcement and the maintenance of dealing with degeneracy.

America has sadly raised generations to see cheating the system as an opportunity rather than a moral failure. Too many of our leaders make excuses for it instead of confronting it. The result is a society with lower trust, more disorder, and billions in avoidable costs that compound year after year.
