The German state law exam decides who becomes a judge, prosecutor, or attorney in Germany.

It is graded on an 18-point scale; below 4 is a fail; 9 or above is a distinction. The written part, which carries most of the grade, is graded blind: a code number, two independent examiners, name and sex of examinees invisible.

In North Rhine-Westphalia (2023), results show women failing at 34% vs. 22% for men, and distinctions going to 27% of men vs. 16% of women—the male distribution sitting 1.3 points higher, at equal variance. Other regions and years tend to show a similar pattern.

The part of the exam with the lowest grader bias—that is, the anonymous written part—consistently shows the widest gender gap, with men outperforming women.
