Fun story: Rusted Moss started off as just this. It was meant to be an experiment in getting procedural animation to work. Just an abandoned project for testing stuff.
Now it's a game 😅

I recommend using krita instead of Photoshop because:
1- doesn't take much processing power or ram
2- it's free
3- allows python scripting
4- it is designed for drawing
5- it reads and writes the psd format

It's amazing to see an artist capable of drawing dozens of characters sprites within 8x8 pixels limitation, games like Reventure and Minit are a fine example of that style and they are incredibly fun games btw 👍

Instead of using the entire art piece name, use simple names like the "Green dude" or "big head" since no one will ever see the original files.

A lot of people may not know that, but artists sometimes spend a lot of time actually not drawing but instead exporting which may take more time than the art itself especially in the game dev industry, the only solution for this problem is automation and using tools.

I recently played Vigil the longest night and the art style is phenomenal and I really like the design choice for making the main character 3d which somehow blends well with the 2d environment.
