🐟🐠🦈🐬 The “CORAL REEF RESTORATION AS A STRATEGY TO IMPROVE ECOSYSTEM SERVICES” is a @UNEP / @ICRI_Coral_Reef report on coral restoration that features our work in Fiji 🇫🇯

Coral reefs are vital ecosystems that are under threat. Rising ocean temperatures and acidity are causing coral bleaching and death. But there's hope! We must take action to reduce our carbon emissions. Let's work together to protect these vital ecosystems for future generations!
Over the years, we conducted ongoing workshops with the local students in Mo’orea as part of To’a Ora, mentoring the next gen of coral gardeners. In 2022, we created a second program with the school of Teahupo’o. So far, we’ve trained 74 island kids on the importance of the reef.
Coral reefs are important to coastal communities and provide substantial economic value through biodiversity governance and ecosystem services.
Although reef restoration creates opportunities for conservation, it’s harder than it looks to unlock investment pro reef interventions

The potential loss of coral reefs would be catastrophic - collapsing livelihoods, eroding food-security, decreasing coastal protection, and thwarting the climate adaptation efforts. We must act now to protect coral reefs from extinction! #ForCoral
The Ocean deserves our respect and care.
The Ocean sustains all life on Earth and provides every second breath that we take. The ocean regulates the weather and climate. Our future is tied up with the Ocean. Just another reason to love and protect the Ocean.
If we want to restore our ocean, we will need the wisdom of indigenous people. Connecting traditional's empirical knowledge with scientific research is key to improve MPA management. Because they are the people who will become decision-makers for their communities and countries.
REGENERATING OUR OCEAN FOR PEOPLE & PLANET
Currently, 97% of the ocean is open to exploitation. We need more #MarineProtectedAreas. There is a need for conservation policies that protect #marine#biodiversity & its contributions to people.
Protecting at least 30% of our ocean by 2030 will help ecosystems & communities survive & thrive for generations to come. But this can only be achieved if we build a global network of Marine Protected Areas that recognizes & promotes local and Indigenous peoples-led initiatives.
Coral reef biodiversity is our business & the foundation of our identity, from restoration to management to indigenous peoples and local communities, from ridge to reef and fish. Sharing experience and building partnerships to better support coral diversity.
➡️ The importance of the social dimensions of coral reef restoration projects:
1) Include the protection & restoration of coral reef ecosystems
2) Respect rights and knowledges of #IndigenousPeoples
3) Bring benefits to local communities;
4) Bring local benefits to #biodiversity

As 2022 comes to a close, it’s time to reflect and give thanks for an amazing year. May this glassy reef to brighten up your wishes!!
💫✨ Merry Christmas and best wishes for a fun and productive new year to you all!! ✨💫
Did you know that coral reefs are natural breakwaters? Due to their hard, jagged structure, they can reduce wave energy by 97%! 🌊🪸🚧

During cyclones, traditional food sources are often destroyed for coastal communities in Fiji. ⛈️🌊@Corals4Conserv1 assists communities to adapt by diversify farming, setting aside no-fishing recovery zones 🐟🐠& farming chickens adapted to local free-range conditions. 🐣🐥🐥
As ocean temperatures continue to rise at an alarming rate, the greatest hope for preserving and sustaining coral reefs lies in a collective stewardship by its many users and beneficiaries.
Marine protected areas are still facing financial barriers that prevent the required expansion, replication, and resilience. That’s why we work with youths & traditional communities to reinforce local cooperation & youth leadership in tackling the coral crisis.
