It is interesting how we can actually use knowledge about marketing and consumer culture for things as simple as memes to get a message across and for it to be popular and possibly go viral. #lecture13
A lot of memes that go viral do so because many people agree with the message behind it. It is important to step back and wonder why something went so viral because it can indicate the state of mind of the general public. #lecture13
I found it interesting when Vivek pointed out that social media pieces such as memes usually go viral because of some type of “mob frenzy”. I noticed this myself, there are many memes that are political and give out some type of message that appeals to a certain group of people.
@AnnumSiddiqui @ElizabethG_Educ Yes and it can potentially enable a lot of racists, homophobes etc. to feel like they have a community of people on their side which is a scary thought.
@ElizabethG_Educ I’m unsure about this because then we leave social media platforms to determine whether something is hate speech or not which could be very scary!
@johnboachie4 In western societies we are very close although it is not perfect yet. However it is a massive problem in other societies who silence their citizens.
@SabMaiorano8 It’s so important to be cautious about how we phrase things and what we say because we could be perceived as someone much worse than we are.
@pgiouzelis_ Yes when I think back about all the accounts I made when I was younger it scares me. I hope future employers don’t find them because I probably said such foolish things. I wish I was taught about the consequences when I was younger.
I find it interesting that Vivek performed a study of racism specific to heavy metal. Usually racism is dealt with as a whole but it’s also important to study individual communities and their specific problems with racism (or any other type of hate speech). #lecture13
I think that it is from a larger issue which is that people constantly compare themselves to celebrities online personas and it gets frustrating for people to compete with that.
@DanielA13231823 @meaghan_educ307 Agreed. Kids get a lot of flack since they use their phones a lot but young parents are also a part of the social media generation. They are raising kids while using cell phones so we must be mindful to not neglect the next generation of kids. That could cause serious issues.
@Shania01048216 Yes we live in an age where a lot of people film everyday life for fun so it’s very easy for people to get caught doing wrong and that would end up on YouTube!
@Saarahm003 @Alyssa53148885 Yes. It’s so easy to compare yourself to these ridiculous standards we see on Instagram from models and celebrities that have perfect bodies and what looks to be perfect lives online.
