UMass could help make the market here more competitive, but instead choose to financially benefit from students using most of their paycheck.

On March 22nd, parents who are @LivingatUMass in University Village marched to chancellor Andy Mangels’s office to demand the university lower their rents! They are demanding that the rents be set at 30% of a typical 20-hour GEO job, or $783.84 a month.

Many of the residents are international students who, along with their dependents and spouses, have restrictions on their employment. The university claims to care about diversity, but if the rent is not lowered there will be no room for diversity and inclusion at UMass.
