When U.S. airspace was shut down on September 11, 2001, Canada launched Operation Yellow Ribbon, diverting hundreds of international and U.S.-bound flights to Canadian airports.

At Halifax, aircraft were diverted and thousands of passengers were stranded. In Gander, 38 airliners carrying 6,122 passengers and 473 crew members were welcomed by a community that opened its homes, schools and hearts to complete strangers.

One of the most remarkable acts of kindness in aviation history.
