🎬This is Le Manoir du diable (1896), directed by Georges Méliès and widely regarded as the first horror film.

In just a few minutes, it already contains a devil, a transforming bat, skeletons, ghosts, and a gothic setting — all created with Méliès’ pioneering trick photography. It’s theatrical and playful rather than truly frightening by modern standards, but it established many of the visual ideas that horror films would keep using for decades.

It’s remarkable how many genre elements appear this early.
