Cortland FD responded to an unusual call for wires down which resulted in a fire in a large quantity of construction piping. Crews responded finding thick black smoke and specialized foam was used to extinguish the fire. Construction crews assisted to move debris.
Capt. Roger and FF Gosser are having a ducky day!! Thanks to a family dog who kept checking the storm drain and an owner who listened to him 5 ducklings were safely rescued. Cortland FD staff retrieved 5 mallards. They were transferred to Cornell Wildlife in good condition.
Both happen and saddened to announce the retirement of Deputy Chief Duane Pierce. With more than 20 years of service to the Cortland Fire Department his wit, talent and expertise will be missed. Congratulations on your new adventures.
Cortland FD responded @ 730 PM to an apartment fire 3/1/21. Fire was on the back of the building & the attic. FFs attacked the fire & searched of the building. All occupants were accounted for. The tower ladder was used to put out the fire. 1 person was taken to the hospital.
When the weather turns cold folks often want to use a space heater. Make sure it is UL or Intertek approved. Keep them far from items that can heat up overtime and catch fire and make extra efforts to check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
Several inches of snow are expected tonight into tomorrow. Please take the time to make fire safety a priority. Check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, use only approved heating devices and be cautious shoveling snow.
