George Connelly was one of the most gifted and influential footballers of his generation. A commanding and agile presence on the field, known for his intelligence, composure and technical brilliance, he became a central figure in Celticโs dominant side of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
During a decade at the club he won multiple league championships and domestic cups, made 254 first-team appearances and helped Celtic reach the 1970 European Cup Final after a famous victory over Don Revieโs Leeds United in a match dubbed the โBattle of Britainโ.
Internationally, he played a key role in Scotlandโs qualification for the 1974 World Cup, earning a reputation as one of the countryโs finest players and the nickname โThe Scottish Beckenbauerโ.
But in 1975, at the height of his career and with the world at his feet, he inexplicably vanished. Now, for the first time on screen, the man himself answers the question that has tormented supporters for decades:
Whatever happened to George Connelly?

@PaulJohnDykes A privilege to say I watched him play. A massive loss to our club but you must accept his decision! Well done George. Youโd have made it to the top in world football! A genius.
I was truly blessed to have seen George Connelly play, you would have thought he was Celtic's answer to Franz Beckenbauer, he was that good.

Excited by this!
Connelly is a fascinating figure, so talented but riven by self doubt. Quite relatable to a lot of people Iโm sure.
โHe had it in him to be Beckenbauerโ - Davie Hay
Considering the level Scottish players operated in back then I donโt think thatโs hyperboleโฆ
โThe reality is that 99 per cent of footballers will not achieve over the course of a 15 or 20 year career what George Connelly achieved in less than half of that time.
โMy first priority when I got involved in this project was to ensure that we restored Georgeโs colours and that we properly celebrated him as a success story and not just โwhat could have been?โ
โAt a time when Celtic were playing elite football at a European level George absolutely belonged there.โ

So the mystery has been solved.
George Connelly is the mystery man.
The story of Connelly has always intrigued me as he was before my time but nevertheless, I'm fully aware of how regarded he was a player and his status among the support.
Looking forward to seeing this...
