The composition is done in rows to mimic people sitting in pews of a chapel.
The lack of detail down the middle of the sheep's faces and ears makes an implied Cross. It also created a grid or cage to invoke the feeling of being trapped.
Some notes about the piece:
The 11 Sheep and The Wolf represent the 12 Disciples. The Wolf is a reference to Judas Iscariot.
The Wolf smiles tight to the point of bleeding, representing my discomfort and feelings of betrayal (allusion to ‘the kiss’ when Judas betrayed Jesus).
This is my most stolen artwork and has been reposted so much it's lost a lot of the original context. So for lesbian visibility week I wanted to remind folks this a vent piece about my feelings growing up as a closeted black lesbian in the deep south.
