Keratitis simply refers to immune system response to an invasion of cornea or a damage to it in what we term as corneal inflammation.

Herpes Simplex #Keratitis that's triggered by activation of HSV residing in the unilateral (one side) of the 5th Cranial nerve's ganglion.

Exposure to UV light can also trigger herpes Simplex #keratitis.

Herpes Simplex virus is usually contracted by humans during early life & they migrate to V1 ganglion (ophthalmic division of the 5th cranial nerve (trigeminal nerve).

The viral genome is incorporated into the hosts DNA making eradication impossible with our current medical technological knowhow.

The virus stays quiet in the nerve ganglion until triggered by a number of factors that weaken or suppress immune system response.

Below are some of the most common;

✓UV exposure
✓Stress
✓ Menstruation (some women)
✓Systemic Steroids use
✓ Immunodeficiency of the immune system triggers especially the T cells category of White blood cells e.g as in the case of HIV.

High intensity UV light (sunlight) could trigger HSK via local suppression of immunity & cellular stress pathways.

For individuals more vulnerable to herpes Simplex keratitis,using UV blocking sunglasses 🕶️ or UV blocking spectacle lenses eliminate this risk! Using one is more than just reducing the intensity of the sun but an eye health precaution!

👉 Should one experience a recurring episodes of what manifests as HSK we encourage the person to see us immediately to rule it out or apply a multidisciplinary care alongside our partners!

A recurring Herpes Simplex Keratitis should be referred to ophthalmologists or hematologists for blood tests to rule out immunocompromised status or any other potential health issue.

HSK responds well to medication especially when administered early.

The patients will complain of pain & photophobia of acute onset or recent onset of episodes of mild blurry vision...
