This is a worryingly important point, which I think will only become more relevant in the coming months and years in Europe (and the world, really). The illusion of playing by the rules while effectively circumventing or perverting them could become the new normal.
Those who believe in Social Democratic, Green or Liberal agendas have so become accustomed to viewing Far Right populists as automatically anti-EU that they will struggle to work out how to handle Far Right populists that coexist with or even harness the EU to their agendas
And most importantly:
Ask who benefits from your outrage.
If something makes you instantly angry at a group of people, it’s worth pausing and digging deeper.
Outrage is a currency and someone’s cashing in…..

25-year-old Victoria Thomas-Bowen has been given a suspended prison sentence today for assault by beating, for throwing a milkshake over Nigel Farage in Clacton.
Farage has claimed her being spared jail is "two-tier justice". It's not, as I'd like to highlight in a small 🧵
As a Brit, I've been watching the American election results with sorrow for my American friends. Some are comparing it to the Brexit vote here, imagining if we'd voted for Brexit twice. But here's the thing... in a sense, we did. And here are some lessons from it. 🧵
12 September 1939 | A Dutch Jewish girl, Hanna Harriët Samson, was born in Emmen.
In December 1942 she was deported from #Westerbork to #Auschwitz. She was murdered in a gas chamber after selection.
A very large anti-racist crowd in #Brighton. On the A23 entering here, the Patcham Pylons inscription hails guests and then says:
“If friend we greet thee hand and heart. If stranger no longer be. If foe our love shall conquer thee.”
That spirit proven a thousand-fold tonight.
Must watch on House of Commons reform @EllieChowns
Dr Ellie Chowns, "As a newly elected member, I'd like to offer observations on three elements on how this house operates: sitting, speaking and voting"
➡️ Sitting
- Chamber is too small
- In Council and in European parliament we had own seat, desk, plug in devices
- Extraordinary there aren't enough seats for every MP
There is a practice of Christian prayers, as a daughter of preachers I am familiar with this. But in this day and age where we are a mix of all faiths and none, it might be time to represent a range of faiths
➡️ Speaking
- If we have more time limits more MPs would be incentivised to speak
- Trying to get a slot, bobbing up and down, last week I did for five solid hours without getting attention of the speaker
- This is not good for a democracy
- Find a better way of allocating speaking time
- The culture in this house is everything from excessive deference to braying, we need to clean to clean up politics, we are here to debate in as positive a spirit as possible
➡️ Voting
- It's extraordinary we do not have electronic voting
- While I've been here I've participated in 5 votes, that's taken 1.25 quarter
- If you add up all the votes thats 1.5 months of MPs time, totally unproductive
- If we got rid of the voting lobbies we could double the physical size of the chamber (everyone could then have a seat)
"My final point, if we want to be a truly modern house of commons: proportional representation"
If Braverman defects to Reform, expect the party to kick up a nuclear-level stink about Short Money funding.
With 5 MPs, their funding is capped.
With 6 or more MPs, it's uncapped.
But there's some indication defections don't count for the purpose of calculating Short Money.
Poorest fifth has 8% of the total disposable income.
38% of universal credit claimants are in work.
50 UK families have more wealth than half the population.
Top 1% has more wealth than 70% of the population combined,
Tax the rich to reduce poverty.

I don’t speak of this often but listening to Nigel Farage in tonight’s debate I must.
My dad was an immigrant. From the moment he arrived in this country he worked hard every day in labouring jobs. My most vivid recollection is of his tired & weary eyes and oil stained overalls when he came home after a 12 hour factory shift. Even then he was able to raise a smile for us. He was kind & gentle & loved my mum with passion. He raised a family of 4 & instilled in each of us a fierce sense of right & wrong & love of country. His proudest day was when he became a British citizen. I recall him with love & affection & pride & carry the lessons he taught me in my heart every day. If it were not for my dad I would not be a lawyer today & in his memory I work hard everyday to make a difference for as many as I can. Immigration is a beautiful thing & don’t let charlatans like Farage tell you otherwise ❤️
So tedious. Again: the Good Friday/Belfast Agreement and security parts of EU-UK trade deal are predicated on ECHR membership, as Sunak well knows. This is just playground talk.
The Conservative Party has fallen into the hands of the most extreme right wing zealots it is possible to image.
Flirting with Nigel Farage, a lurch so far to the right, it makes Ken Clarke and Michael Heseltine look like socialists.
Suella, the xenophobe & the darling of conference, Liz Truss the economics expert.
When allegations of deception arise, the party’s modus operandi appears to be to deflect with more falsehoods, blatantly ignoring irrefutable evidence.
Each address, from varied interlocutors, seems to mandate our genuflection to their dictates, implying repercussions for noncompliance.
The party has fallen so far, it’s unrecognisable from the one-nation conservativism of a bygone era.
Dear @michelledonelan -
As Science Minister, I think you owe the UK science community an apology for this nasty propaganda which undermines the community you are charged with representing.
RT if you agree...
See below.
Just in case anyone wondered why the EU would not sign a new science contract with the UK govt while the NI Protocol “dispute” was underway…
…they knew what Frost has now admitted.
2.5 years of lost science collaboration in on you, @BorisJohnson.
