@kendyll_engl350 I enjoyed peer review too! A lot of course underutilize its potential in our class settings. I also enjoyed being able to give other students in the class feedback for the betterment of their work!
I am currently working on my reflection for our final. I've realized how much I learned in the course about the humanities, and this class has exposed me to a lot of great things I can use in the future! Putting GitHub on my resume
This week I did peer review with @Malcolm_engl350. Since our topics for our grants were both on sports, I thought it was really interesting to see things from his point of view! Both of us will have to keep getting our word count lower, but I know we can do it!
@Malcolm_engl350 I did the same thing! I'll have to avoid jargon when making my edits. Condensing the grants will be a challenge, but I purposefully but so much so there would be more cuts to make than additions.
My meeting with @dr_stover went well! Luckily, my draft will mostly need cuts and a few additions to be where it needs them to be. I know I'll be able to make these changes quickly. Hopefully can get the word count down with a few words switches too.
@DarcyM_engl350 and I peer reviewed each other's grants on Friday. As I was reading her grant, it inspired me to add more information about my project process itself in the project description, instead of just info-dumping. Was really eye-opening for me and helped me complete it!
@kelsey_engl350 Dr. Stover suggested that we start with a story or narrative to hook our readers--since we are writing these grants for people, ultimately they will be interested in stories about other people!
Grant drafting has been fun; I have basically been info-dumping on one of my favorite topics. I know there will be A LOT of cuts to make, but I am prepared! See everyone on peer review day on Friday!
The Gorsevski article on Grant Writing put all the information we've been slowly learning into perspective. Just as the humanities suggests, these projects are for real people--Grant Writing is different from academic writing with its more personable elements.
@kelsey_engl350 I think it will be a struggle at first for me too! I think once we can ease into it though, grant writing will actually be more enjoyable than most academic writing.
I am excited to explore a slightly more creative style for my grant (as it is much different than academic writing)! I will keep this document as a guide. (2/2)
Porter's “Why Academics Have a Hard Time Writing Good Grant Proposals," is eye opening but comforting at the same time. I know the grant will be daunting, but that's what the drafts are for. (1/2)
Today I met with @dr_stover ! We discussed our upcoming grant drafts and she gave me great inspiration for how to "hook" my readers! Genuinely excited to get started (since I get to write about ESports. #DRXWIN#T1Fighting )
@Annabellecnu22 I agree--some of the sketches they showed in the article were pretty messy/incomplete, and just like rough drafts, that is fine! I'll still have to consider the navigation, but have some ideas for the front page now!
The "Wireframing" reading was somewhat familiar to me--my bf does this practice frequently for his CS classes when building websites and applications. The article emphasizes that wireframes don't need to be excessive. Just brainstorming + rough sketches can be most effective.
The Lean Canvas worksheet seemed really daunting at first! I had never thought of some of the questions, like who my audience would be, or what "problems" I wanted to solve. While it took an extra bit of thinking, having the information organized in boxes will be very helpful!
@Malcolm_engl350 @Rachel_Jess_124 I agree! Although showing others our work can be daunting, I think doing so many peer reviews in class has helped me feel more comfortable doing them.
I'm glad we got to have another successful peer review in class! @softlivin and I both reviewed each other's review blogs. I am glad we both found blogs that were so helpful in our grant topics. I took inspiration from @softlivin 's blog format for my own blog too!
The tech explained in the article (twitter bot, marginalia) seemed difficult to make, and I wonder what resources are available in DH to help us (as DH ppl) to learn more how to get started? What are other good models and routes to take? (2/2)
