Last week, my friend's mother was visiting from Ohio. She's 76. She opened the front door and sat down next to the driver.

He looked at me in the mirror like I had brought a bear.

"How long you been driving, hon?"

He understood "how long." He held up two fingers. Then two more. Twenty-two years.

"Grandkids?"

At a red light, he took out his phone. Three grandkids. A baseball uniform. A tiny yellow kindergarten hat.

"Oh, LOOK at him!" she said, loud enough for the car behind us.

By the second light, he was laughing.
By the third, she knew his name. Mr. Sasaki.
By the hotel, he had shown her one more photo. His late wife. Taped on the sun visor, where passengers can't see it.

The meter said ¥2,800. It had stopped at some point. Nobody saw him do it.

She left a folded bill on the seat. "For the baseball player," she said.

Then he did something Tokyo taxi drivers don't do. He got out of the car.

He bowed. Then, slowly, like he was trying it for the first time, he waved.

Twenty-two years. She was the first passenger who ever sat in the front.
