How to tell a traditional Greek from a poser. If someone tells you that Homer's works are sacred untouchable texts, in a way similar to the Bible, this is a anachronism.

The ancient Greeks were constantly remixing Homer’s stories. These poems were culture-defining, to be sure, but in regard to the plots and characters, they were a flexible, living tradition. Changes, expansions, variants, and creative adaptations were normal from their origins onward.

The Iliad and Odyssey started out as oral performances. Singers would riff on them live, adding, dropping, or changing details depending on the crowd. Stuff got layered in over centuries from different times and places, so the “official” version we have today is just the one that eventually settled down. Even the manuscript copies had variants floating around.

Then you’ve got the Epic Cycle, a bunch of other poems that filled in the gaps around the Trojan War. A lot of those differed from Homer on the details. Same subject matter, but different takes on it.

Stesichorus wrote major narrative poems about the Trojan War that directly contradicted Homer. His Palinode explicitly claimed Helen never went to Troy.

The tragic playwrights of Greece went even harder. Aeschylus, Sophocles, and especially Euripides would grab Homeric myths and completely rework the plots, characters’ motives, and endings. No one was clutching pearls about “staying true to the source.”

Later Greek writers kept it going, paraphrasing, expanding, criticizing, or straight-up rewriting the stories.

Dio Chrysostom’s Trojan Oration says that Homer lied, Troy essentially won, Hector killed Achilles, and Helen properly married Paris.

Philostratus’s Heroikos corrects Homer on multiple points, especially regarding Odysseus and other heroes.

Dictys of Crete and Dares also have many divergences from Homer.

Basically, from day one the Greeks treated Homer’s material like a living mythology that was flexible, adaptable, and open for fresh spins. The idea of a single rigid “correct” version is more our modern hang-up than theirs. A traditional Greek would never take such a point of view. But when you don't know history, that's what happens.
