Jeanne Calment, a French supercentenarian who holds the officially verified record for the longest human lifespan in history, living to 122 years and 164 days (1875–1997). Born in Arles, France, she lived through remarkable historical shifts, famously remembering meeting Vincent van Gogh in her family’s shop when she was a teenager. Having outlived both her daughter and her grandson, Calment found herself with no remaining living heirs in her later years, leading to one of the most famous real estate deals in modern history.

In 1965, at the age of 90, Calment entered into a contingency contract known in France as en viager with a 47-year-old notary named André-François Raffray. Under the agreement, Raffray agreed to pay Calment a monthly sum of 2,500 French francs until her death, in exchange for ownership of her spacious Arles apartment once she passed. Given her advanced age, Raffray expected to pay for only a few years before inheriting the property, a standard financial gamble in French real estate.

Instead, Calment lived for another 32 years, outliving Raffray himself. When Raffray died of cancer in 1995 at age 77, his family was still legally obligated to continue the monthly payments. By the time Calment finally passed away in August 1997, the Raffray family had paid her more than double the actual market value of the apartment, prompting Calment to famously remark on her 120th birthday, "In life, one sometimes makes bad deals."

Beyond her famous real estate deal, Calment made pop culture history at age 121 when she released a four-track musical album titled Mistress of Time (Maîtresse du Temps). The 1996 release featured her speaking and recounting memories over a mix of background music, including funk, rap, and techno beats, making her the oldest recording artist in history.
