Cowater International, together with the Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC), has been proud to implement the Expert Deployment Mechanism for Trade and Development (EDM)—a Global Affairs Canada initiative designed to help Canada’s developing country partners negotiate, implement, and maximize the benefits of trade and investment agreements.
Following the launch of Canada-Ecuador Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations in 2024, EDM has worked closely with Ecuador’s Ministry of Production, Foreign Trade, Investment, and Fisheries to support their trade and development goals.
Cowater International is pleased that these negotiations have successfully concluded, and we look forward to continuing to support both #Ecuador in achieving its trade and development objectives and #Canada in its trade diversification strategy.

As we celebrate International Development Week 2025, Modina’s journey is a powerful reminder of how global partnerships can break down systemic barriers and create lasting change. Her path from nurse to Principal of one of Dhaka’s largest nursing colleges began to transform in 2014 when she joined a leadership training program that equipped her with the tools to overcome those very barriers.
#ProNurse, a Global Affairs Canada-funded initiative implemented by Cowater International, is building structured career paths, improving education, and raising professional recognition for nurses across Bangladesh. In partnership with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and key stakeholders, the project ensures nurses receive the support and career opportunities they deserve.

It was a privilege to host the launch of the Canadian Association of International Development Professionals (CAIDP-RPCDI) Mentorship Program for Young International Development Professionals at our Ottawa hub today.
Dr. Rohinton Medhora, former Vice President of Programs at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and Professor of Practice at McGill University, delivered an inspiring and timely message of hope and resilience in the face of current challenges. Drawing on his extensive experience in impact-driven work, he highlighted the power of global alliances and reminded us that meaningful development can happen across all sectors—not just within traditional development institutions.
His message sparked a dynamic discussion among guests on how we can work together to build a more inclusive and sustainable future.

The Facilitating Inclusive, Resilient, and Sustainable Trade (FIRST) Project was launched on Tuesday, January 28, in Lusaka. Supported by the Government of Canada with CA$9.7 million in funding, the initiative aims to strengthen small-scale cross-border trade in Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), and Mozambique.
Implemented by Cowater International over five years (2024–2029), FIRST supports the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and its Protocols on Women and Youth in Trade and Digital Trade. The project focuses on expanding economic opportunities for women, youth, and persons with disabilities by addressing trade-related barriers and discrimination. It also seeks to improve access for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) led by these groups to inclusive and environmentally sustainable trade benefits.
Zambia’s Ministry of Commerce and Trade Permanent Secretary, Lillian Bwalya, emphasized the project’s role in making trade more accessible for marginalized groups. Similarly, DRC’s Ministry of Trade Permanent Secretary, Jules Muilo, highlighted its potential to create a more enabling environment for small-scale traders. Additionally, #FIRST will enhance the capacity of trade ministries and key stakeholders in participating countries to collect and share trade-related data.

We are happy to share that Cowater International, through its Sustainable Energy and Economic Development (SEED II) Project in Jordan, signed a contribution agreement with the Jordan Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Fund and the Cities and Villages Development Bank.
With funding from the Government of Canada (@CanadaDev), and building on the achievements of its first phase, the Project will implement its second phase in the southern Jordan Valley.
It aims to support sustainable development by focusing on the use of renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions to improve living conditions in targeted areas through enhancing the efficiency of resource use, in addition to raising public awareness and education on the importance of renewable energy as part of daily life. The Project will also work to create new job opportunities in the renewable energy sector, which contribute to supporting the local economy and reducing poverty and unemployment rates.
