At the moment I'm convinced that Adam and Eve were real people in a real garden that reflected God's original design but was surrounded by a whole world beyond them.

The original audience wasn't concerned with scientific explanation of creation, rather with how God ordered the world, how does divine effect mundane?

@Rtaylor515 The Hebrew is better read "in a beginning" than "in the beginning." There is no definite article that precedes "Beresheet" (sorry for the crappy transliteration) and that same word isn't in construct with any proper nouns that would make it "THE beginning"
