#OnThisDay in 1833 our founder, Sir William Hillary, conducted his final rescue. The man who saw his vision for a service dedicated to saving lives at sea become a reality, saved more than 300 people during his service. "With courage, nothing is impossible".

As coxswain I felt for the owner of the boat, it broke my heart watching it burn. We are not a fire fighting unit, our role is to save lives at sea. The heat was incredible, there was fuel, flares and possibly gas onboard which could put the crew in unnecessary danger.
On behalf of RNLI IOM, Douglas volunteer crew member, Robert Radcliffe, accepts a cheque for £1600 from his employer, Maitland, to be used for the benefit of all the Island’s lifeboat stations in maintaining the @RNLI ’s life saving operations.
