Ed Toutant was invited back onto Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and won the jackpot after losing on a flawed question during his initial appearance in 2001.
Here's how it happened:
The flawed question: In January 2001, Toutant was playing for a progressive jackpot that had reached $1.86 million. The $16,000 question asked about a genetically modified vegetable that was engineered to glow when it needed water. Toutant answered "tomatoes," which was marked incorrect, and he left with just $1,000.
The error is discovered: After the show, Toutant researched the question and found it was faulty. The show's research was based on a British experiment that used potatoes, but it misstated the location of the experiment as England instead of Scotland. Furthermore, scientists at Oxford, England, had recently performed a different, unrelated experiment involving glowing tomatoes, making Toutant's answer valid.
A second chance: Producers invited Toutant back for a special episode on September 7, 2001, to resume his game from the $16,000 level. The progressive jackpot bonus of $860,000 was also reinstated for him.
Victory: Toutant successfully answered all of the remaining questions, including the final million-dollar question, to win the full $1.86 million.
Think we all have to admit — if we really do end up signing Isak, that’s the end of the Coutinho money. It’s been a hell of a ride. Outlasted five Prime Ministers. God bless that little samba fella. 💃🏼
