Amazon axing the new STARGATE series because it was supposedly too niche is such a frustrating executive decision.
This is STARGATE.
The original movie launched in 1994. STARGATE SG-1 ran for 10 seasons. STARGATE ATLANTIS ran for five more. Fans have kept this franchise alive for decades.
Martin Gero, who wrote on SG-1 and ATLANTIS, was developing the new series. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi were consulting producers.
People who understood the franchise were involved.
And Amazon apparently got nervous that the show would appeal too much to STARGATE fans.
That is insane.
Die-hard fans are not the problem. They are the bridge.
They tell friends to watch. They explain the premise. They build word of mouth before casual audiences ever show up.
Studios keep wanting legacy IP without the people who actually love it.
But that “baggage” is the audience.
STARGATE does not need to be sanded down for everyone.
It needs to be good enough that fans bring everyone else in.
@MattKleinman@ApricotPopPop TBH I don’t think they understand what they’re doing, nor do they care.
From what I can tell, Rings of Power is loathed by the Tolkien fans and yet they keep shovelling money into it.
@SGFansUnited Clearly, an existing fanbase is of no value.
In which case, why not just create a whole new show?
Oh yeah I forgot: because imagination is of no value too.
@Dewskidude@crazedinnocence@AmazonMGMStudio Agreed.
It’s soul destroying really.
I’m currently in the process is going back to physical media and what I can’t get that way because it’s all streaming, I’ll probably pirate. After all it’s no loss to them since they don’t provide their “content” in the format I want, right?
@Dewskidude@crazedinnocence@AmazonMGMStudio I feel like an old man shaking my fist at the yoot of today…except its execs & that damned cloud!
I want to own my entertainment again. I'm sick of sub you habe to pay for, have no control over & lose the shows you like as they go to another network (if you're lucky).
@Dewskidude@crazedinnocence@AmazonMGMStudio Somehow it seems both are interlinked - the tech bros and the govs are all joining forces and are more blatantly corrupt than they’ve ever been.
You don’t want good entertainment. You want the slop we give you we can use as a tax writeoff.
@Dewskidude@crazedinnocence@AmazonMGMStudio Why do you think shows and movies are merely referred to as “content” these days. It’s no longer about creativity and good storytelling. It’s only about the clicks.
What a dreadful barren world thoughtless chair-bound paper-pushers have created.
@DelClaire86@BaronDestructo Can't trust today's execs to mess it up.
They have no concept of art or storytelling. They only look at it as "content".
"Content" is devoid of substance and feeling.
Sadly, it's true. Amazon has elected not to move forward with the new Stargate series.
There's not much I can add beyond confirming what's happened. But I will say this...
Creator Martin Gero developed a new Stargate series over two years, ultimately crafting a show that offered a fresh jumping-on point for new viewers while deeply respecting existing canon. It was a series that avoided the pitfalls of several modern remakes and reboots by fully embracing the core of its predecessors: action, adventure, exploration, wonder, heart, humor, and found family. And based on that creative vision, the new Stargate series was greenlit in November of 2025.
As of today, officially, that original vision is no more. We'll never get the opportunity to introduce you to that world and those characters - or reintroduce you to, and check in with, some familiar faces from the past.
My heart breaks. For the incredibly talented writers who worked tirelessly to bring this show to life. For Martin who maintained an unwavering positive outlook throughout despite the challenges, and who always strove to make a show that would honor the fans while welcoming a new audiences. And for the long-suffering Stargate fandom who waited so long and came so close to getting a show they truly would have loved.
