The Furious (🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟) is getting the Five Star Treatment. To be totally candid, I needed to take a walk around the block after finishing this movie. Is this the best action film I’ve seen this decade? Is this literally better than John Wick? Or am I just overreacting as a prisoner of the moment? Because what the Hell did I just watch? How? Who? What? This film’s obvious achievement is the action, which is done to perfection. Perfection. I’m going to say it again…the action is done to perfection. But I think what made such an impression on me is how much heart this film has & the emotional punch it packs. If you know of an action film released this decade better than The Furious, will you let the rest of us know then?
I always have been & always will be partial to stories about revenge. I think revenge is one of the most Cinematic themes you can possible come up with because the main character rises & falls & eventually rises one more time, which is almost always interesting. Part of what makes The Furious such an intelligent film is that it maneuvers around multiple stories. The primary thread being that of a mute father named Wang (Mo Tse) who loses his daughter within minutes of the film’s opening. That coincides with Navin’s (Joe Taslim) pursuit for revenge after his wife, a journalist, is kidnapped. As Wang & Navin team up to dismantle a criminal network of trafficking, the actual leader of said criminal network finds himself down his own path of revenge.
These three revenge subplots all work in concert with one another & lead to a final act that is incredibly meaningful & one of the best stretches of the year. By the time I reached the film’s final act, I was so emotionally attached to Wang and Navin. I felt my eyes watering at multiple respites from the action. It speaks to the fact that this film isn’t just about roundhouse kicks & diving punches- the story comes with a lot of heart.
But speaking of this film’s bread & butter-the roundhouse kicks & diving punches- I just don’t know how any of it could’ve been done better. The action sequences are so creative. I don’t want to spoil any of the set-pieces or give away some of the unforgettable fight sequences, but director Kenji Tanigaki’s direction blew me out of my seat & across the floor of my apartment. The martial arts choreography was equal parts rhythmic & brutally violent. It was a symphony of sheer, unadulterated Cinema. And on a budget of only $20 million in today’s economy? It’s astounding how Tanigaki pulled this off. I truly mean it when I say I think the action in this film surpasses that of John Wick.
The first Oscar for Achievement in Stunt Design will be given out at the 100th Oscars in 2028 for films released in 2027. In other words, The Furious isn’t eligible. But if the award were given out next year? There’s not a single fucking doubt in my mind that The Furious would take it home. The stunt work here is beautiful & poetic. AI could never create something like what I just experienced.
The Furious is one of the best films of 2026.

THE RAID was released 15 years ago today. One of the great martial arts films this century and the film which showcased the talents of filmmaker Gareth Evans, the making of story is pretty massive…

I watched “Hamnet” at a screening.
In just 126 minutes, it encapsulates all the sorrow, pain, loss, fear, love and joy, healing and hope found in life across all times and cultures. That beautiful final scene has the power to rewrite the history of cinema. It lays bare the miracle of movies. To be able to create something like this, Chloé Zhao must be a witch, or perhaps an angel.
