We're currently witnessing a bizarre surge in Postliberal wishcasting being used as a barometer for public opinion. Almost all of it is at odds with actual measures of public opinion, yet it's trumpeted as if it was undeniable fact.

"There's a massive wave of disillusioned young men who are converting to Integralism and Christian Nationalism and who will usher in a traditionalist theocracy in the coming years!"

Well, no. The data show a decline in church attendance, and there's no evidence of an exception in the young male demographic group.

"Zoomers get their news from the Tucker Carlson podcast, so we have to court him to reach the youth vote!"

Nope, not really. The median Tucker listener is 57 - one of the oldest demographic groups of any major outlet.

"The voters want tariffs and economic populism to reshore industry and give us America First economic policy!"

Not so. Surveys all show that Americans oppose tariffs at a 2:1 margin, and Trump's populist economic agenda is his worst-polling issue.

"Americans want manufacturing jobs like their grandparents had!"

False. There are more unfilled manufacturing jobs in the US today than 20 years ago. And surveys show very few people would quit their non-manufacturing jobs to work in a factory.

"JD Vance's message resonates with America - he's a lock to be president in 2028!"

Nope. Recent polling put Vance's unfavorable rating at 60%, and another has him trailing even AOC in a head-to-head matchup.

"Tariffs are working and there's no effect on prices!"

Not so. Retail prices on tariff-responsive goods have unambiguously increased.

The simple reality is that Postliberals are out of touch with America on multiple issues and political priorities. But rather than take that as a sign of troubles ahead for them, they turn instead to unverifiable anecdotal claims and pretend that they are certainties that they've somehow discerned even though they don't appear anywhere in the data. And every one of those claims conveniently lines up with their ideological priors.

The result is a far-right version of the Marxist "autoethnography" genre that came to dominate the woke left in the late 2010s as a substitute for evidence. And if the right doesn't discard the Postliberal wishcasters soon, they're going to face a similar repudiation at the ballot box.

This is an incredible story by Reuters: they reveal that China now has a working EUV lithography machine prototype, which makes China the only country in the world to have succeeded at replicating the ASML technology, years earlier than anticipated.

The machine apparently "fills nearly an entire factory floor". It's operational and successfully generates extreme ultraviolet light (what "EUV" stands for), but has not yet produced working chips.

The objective for the latter is 2028, which is a crazy fast timeline: ASML took 18 years to go from prototype to machines that could produce commercially-available chips, China aims to do it in 3.

The security measures around the project look insane. The employees work under fake identities so they don't know each other's real names. They work inside secure facilities where "no one outside the compound could know what they were building - or that they were there at all". They're divided in "teams who are kept isolated from each other to protect the confidentiality of the project," where "they don't know what the other teams work on."

For foreign employees, China exceptionally gave them Chinese passports and allowed them to maintain dual citizenship, which is normally forbidden under Chinese law.

This seems to be because some of the employees are former ASML workers such as Lin Nan, ASML's former head of light source technology (https://t.co/NEGEKd4JjS), who would be less vulnerable to Western sanctions under Chinese citizenship.

The salaries offered are apparently "uncapped" with "signing bonuses that started at 3 million to 5 million yuan" and "home-purchase subsidies".

This all means that we're looking, within a few years, at yet another self-inflicted wound by the West: the development, because of sanctions, of a serious competitor for Europe's most successful technology company (one of our very rare ones!).

And the worst part, for Europe, is that these sanctions weren't even initiated by us nor serve our interests: we just followed Washington's lead as usual, suffering the costs while getting no obvious benefit out of it. Quite the contrary in fact as all its doing is replacing a massive customer with a massive future competitor.

We, again, let ourselves be the chessboard on which others play. We just absorb the damage from both sides and have no voice in the game.
