"This is a five-alarm fire. It’s freaking out all the data-watchers I’ve been pestering over the past twenty months, who are usually assuring me that the guardrails have held." ICYMI @crampell on Trump and the Census:

Reporter on Bond Market: The yields have come back up since then. Have you talked to Bessent about another type of intervention.?
Trump: The ultimate intervention is our military. And if we have to use that, we will.
Yale's M4A "study" - which is not peer reviewed - simply plugged in lower spending levels without modeling how the health care system would function under the policies.
So they achieved $1 trillion in savings by... assuming $1 trillion in savings. Congratulations? 🧵
Lawyers for President Donald Trump issued a letter demanding the Center for American Progress retract a factual report or face a $5 billion lawsuit. That report analyzes the impact of the administration’s deployments of the National Guard in cities around the country, finding that they had no measurable impact on the rate of violent crime reductions.
In response, CAP President and CEO @NeeraTanden issued the following statement: https://t.co/DVWxCWgOHu
I get asked at least once a week whether we should still trust the federal government’s data releases. Up until now, I have always said yes

Hear me out. What if instead of selling food below cost to all comers at taxpayer expense, and then using more taxpayer dollars to subsidize private companies that can't compete with those prices, we had a program that targeted nutritional assistance just to the people who needed it, as a supplement? We could call it, I don't know, supplemental nutritional assistance
Lead official for Mayor Mamdani's NYC Groceries tells me city may give grants to local grocers fearing competition from city-run stores
"policies and programs, grants, incentives that can come alongside these grocery stores to support other local independent businesses"
The budget deficit in Biden's last year (FY24) was 6.3% of GDP. This year, Trump's first full year in office (FY26), CBO projects it at approx. 6.6% of GDP.
Trump: We could have GDP of 10, 12, 15 times if they just leave us alone. Let interest rates go down. It’s a very unfair system.
They should drop interest rates because it means we have a strong country and it's all based on credit, meaning good credit, and we have the best credit and we'd pay off the debt very easily, very quickly.
You can't make this up:
At 8:15 AM ET yesterday, the 10Y Note Yield was trading at 4.68% when the US Treasury announced it would be increasing bond buybacks to $4 billion.
The yield fell to a low of 4.63% as the US Treasury pledged to provide "liquidity support."
Exactly 24 hours later, the 10Y Note Yield is ABOVE levels seen prior to the announcement, at 4.71%.
It's going to take a lot more intervention to tame this beast.
"Ultimately, all this financial engineering just can't get you out of your problems."
Fmr. CEA Chair @jasonfurman reacts to the Treasury Department doubling government debt buybacks in an attempt to steady the bond market:

.@crampell: "There are a lot of sectors that have found it difficult to find workers to take those jobs. They're often very difficult jobs. They're often not the best-paying jobs... And so when we lose these workers, those jobs will often go begging."
Census issued a study claiming 24,000 noncitizens voted in 2020. Unlike other Census publications, it was unsigned. Some other more subtle things missing too, like error bars (is 24k statistically different from 0?).
If you have info about this study, please reach out.
