Lebanese footballer Celine Haidar has woken from a coma nearly two months after the 19-year-old suffered a serious head injury during an Israeli airstrike on Beirut.
On November 16, Haidar was fleeing her home in Al-Chiyyah in Beirut’s southern suburbs after an evacuation order from Israel. She was struck on the right side of her head, leaving her in critical condition.
Speaking to The Athletic at the end of December, Haidar’s father Abbas said: “Celine was beginning her life, building step by step with football. This injury cut off her journey.”
Earlier this week, Haidar awoke from the coma. According to family, she is able to recognise them and squeeze hands. She was also able to write the names of her nurses.
Haidar still cannot talk easily and mobility is limited and she is still using a ventilator. Further medical assessments are required to determine if she will make a full recovery.

💬 “The 2034 Men's World Cup was awarded to Saudi Arabia. Together with many other female footballers, I have rebelled against this, because it is a country where women have hardly any rights. A country where I am not welcome, because I am attracted to women. I am not naive and I knew that our action would make little difference. But it is not in my nature to keep my mouth shut.”

Mexican President Sheinbaum fires back at Trump in a statement: "Seventy percent of the illegal weapons seized from criminals in Mexico come from your country. We do not produce these weapons, nor do we consume synthetic drugs. Tragically, it is in our country that lives are lost to the violence resulting from meeting the drug demand in yours."
@ucsantabarbara Are these the kind of people you want teaching at your university? I can't fathom learning about race issues from someone who plays into racist and transphobic narratives.
