And DON’T get me started on how wonderfully his characterisation works with Yellow, my goodness that was so beautiful to witness me and my brother were both just so happy and in awe with every scene.
So no, he WOULD NOT have been better if he was a woman. I’m honestly so happy he’s not. Because clearly, a lot of people are not used to this type of representation and NEED to be exposed to it far more. It’s beautiful, he’s a wonderfully written character.
This. This is the beauty of the feminine spirit. Why would he HAVE to be a WOMAN? Why can’t he be feminine and be a man—and still present in his own way? He’s literally such a unique character I was delighted to see every scene of because he’s so interesting. God!!
As for drama—god, he kept reminding us that this is a comedy. And being integrity—despite Flowery ordering the flowers to keep us away and such, he literally sets that aside because he so strongly believes in his own morals—and wants to help Susie on her pursuit of love.
He’s not a skinny femboy, he’s not some over dramatic “theatre kid”, he’s not annoying no. He’s hyper fem—YET HE’S STILL STRONG! He’s built quite sturdily! He holds yellow instead of yellow holding him! This ALSO breaks down the expectations of what “femininity” looks like.
Blue fundamentally BREAKS this OVERUSED form of “representation”. He’s not a stereotype. He’s not a caricature. He’s this unique, underrepresented type of person that absolutely DESERVES to be used MORE in media. Theres so many layers to it!
Blue being a feminine MAN is also so important considering his racial coding. We do not see this type of character in popular media. When it comes to poc men—black men ESPECIALLY, many people automatically (whether consciously or not) slot them into a specific personality type.
But they DO have one! And when it comes to deltarune, a game where gender/one’s identity seems to be a pretty important theme—it’s crazy to me that we’re trying to erase a character’s deliberate, explicitly defined gender because of preferences.
LIGHTNERS reflect our own world pretty closely, so it could be totally argued that they DO have a gender binary that should be respected. PLANTNERS directly address that they are neither just Darkners nor Lightners, so they do seem to have a looser gender binary-/
I’m not even being woke—like the scene was deliberately hand fed to us. I personally believe DARKNERS don’t have a strict gender binary yes, they are all kinda fluid to me and accept each other unconditionally.
I will say:
The genders of the plantners is so important that there was a whole SCENE dedicated to them addressing their genders. So to erase Blue’s gender by arguing he would’ve been better as a woman is really saying a lot about you all.
