Most anger isn’t really about anger. As emotions intensify, we often move through several layers before reaching anger—or even hate. This scale represents those different emotional levels and their intensity.

When we learn to recognize these emotional shifts, we gain valuable information about what’s happening inside of us.
That awareness allows us to slow down, process what we’re experiencing, and respond with compassion and self-control instead of reacting in the heat of the moment.

One powerful exercise is to slow down and notice what happens in your body at each level.

Ask yourself:

• What do I feel in my body?
• What do I see or notice around me?
• What do I hear in my thoughts?
• What does time feel like in that moment?
