Confidence is a key element of Rawls's notion of self-respect. Furthermore, Rawls notices that this confidence is the outcome of social relations, mainly provided by "communities of interests".

2021 marked the 50th anniversary of the publication of Rawls’ A Theory of Justice. This book is arguably one of the essential works of political philosophy of the 20th century. That same year, I presented a paper in a Congress at the University of Minho.

This paper presents an interpretation of self-respect I term "value-confidence" and sheds some light on the "cryptic" topic of self-respect in Rawls. I argue that a voluntarist notion of agency requires strong confidence in one's moral power to turn choices into values.
