🚨 MONDAY’S MARKET OPEN COULD BE A MAJOR TRAP
The S&P 500 ended the week at 7,812, just shy of its all-time high. Investors are celebrating as earnings season gets underway.
But beneath the surface, the situation looks much more concerning.
Here’s what could put markets under pressure on Monday:
Treasury yields are hitting levels not seen in decades. The 30-year yield stands at 5.60%, while the 10-year has reached 5.23%. With risk-free returns this high, expensive stock valuations face a serious test. Many companies may struggle to justify their current prices.
Oil prices remain elevated. Brent is trading near $105, while WTI sits around $92. Hurricane Isaias has reportedly disrupted approximately 63% of Gulf oil production, while rising Middle East tensions continue to support prices. Higher energy costs could add even more pressure to inflation.
The Fed’s tone is turning increasingly hawkish. Waller warned that several rate hikes could be necessary to bring inflation under control within a reasonable timeframe. The October 27–28 Fed meeting is now firmly on the radar.
AI stocks are showing signs of weakness. Thursday’s technology-led selloff exposed growing concerns about stretched valuations. Chipmakers lost momentum on Friday, putting additional pressure on the stocks responsible for much of the market’s recent gains.
Here’s how the pieces fit together:
→ Rising oil prices → higher inflation expectations → increasing bond yields → a more hawkish Fed → downward pressure on equities.
This chain of risks is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
The S&P 500 is trading near record highs despite a challenging macroeconomic environment. Much of that strength depends on a small group of AI stocks and expectations of a dovish Fed shift.
If those expectations fade, the market could face a serious reality check.
Record highs don’t always mean a healthy market. Sometimes, they hide growing risks.
Keep a close eye on Monday’s opening session. If Treasury yields climb further and oil remains above $100, volatility could increase significantly.
Stay alert. The next major move could catch unprepared investors off guard.
