Crescentwatch has received reliable reports of the new crescent moon (hilal) being sighted on Sunday evening (May 17th) by experienced moonsighters (via naked-eye) in multiple locations across North America, including New Jersey, Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Michigan, Arizona, California, and Washington.

This marks the end of the month of Dhu al-Qidah and the beginning of the sacred month of Dhu al-Hijjah, with its first 'day' commencing on Monday, May 18th. The day of Eid al-Adha (the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah) will therefore be on Wednesday, May 27th, insha'Allah.

Crescentwatch encourages everyone to go out to look for the new crescent moon (hilal) on the evening of Sunday, May 17th (after 29 days of Dhu al-Qidah), in anticipation of the beginning of the sacred Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah 1447 AH, and the determination of Eid al-Adha (the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah).

Qualified Muslim astronomers and reliable visibility forecasts indicate that on Sunday evening, May 17th, a naked-eye (unaided) sighting of the new crescent moon will be highly likely across all of North America. (View visibility forecasts for your region here.)

If the new moon is seen on the evening of Sunday, May 17th, the day of Eid al-Adha will be on Wednesday, May 27th (the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah), otherwise Eid will be on the following day.

Crescentwatch did not receive any positive naked-eye sighting reports for the new crescent moon (hilal) from anywhere on the evening of Friday, April 17th. All reports were negative from across North America.

We are thus completing the 30th day of Shawwal and beginning the month of Dhu al-Qidah on Saturday evening, when the moon should be easily visible throughout North America. The first "day" of Dhu al-Qidah 1447 AH will thus be Sunday, April 19th.

It is nonetheless good practice to still go out to observe the new crescent moon on Saturday evening (you can share your observation here). The crescent (hilal) would be visible shortly after sunset, in the area above where the sun had set. It is a beautiful experience to witness its emergence, and it is a sunnah of our noble Prophet ﷺ that we hope the ummah revives.

Crescentwatch encourages everyone to go out to look for the new crescent moon (hilal) on the evening of Thursday, March 19th (after 29 days of Ramadan) in anticipation of the beginning of the Islamic month of Shawwal and the arrival of Eid al-Fitr.

Qualified Muslim astronomers and reliable visibility forecasts indicate that on Thursday evening, a "naked-eye" (unaided) sighting of the new crescent moon will be probable in all of North America.

If the moon is sighted on Thursday, March 19th, Eid al-Fitr will occur on Friday, March 20th. Otherwise, we will complete 30 days of Ramadan, and Eid will fall on Saturday. (Check the visibility forecast for your region here.) We will post our final determination on Thursday here as soon as possible, but no later than 8:00 pm PT.
