The bronze serpent is one of the strangest cures in the Bible, and Jesus said it was about Him.

In Numbers 21, Israel is dying of snakebites in the desert. 

God’s remedy makes no logical sense: 

Moses lifts a bronze serpent on a pole, and “if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.” Numbers 21:9.

Not work for it. Not earn it. Not climb. Just LOOK.

The very image of the curse, a serpent, lifted up, becomes the cure.

Then Jesus, to a Pharisee at night: “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of
Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him may have eternal life.” John 3:14-15.

On the cross, Jesus became the curse. “God made Him to be sin who knew no sin.” 2 Corinthians 5:21.

The curse, lifted up, became the cure.

The dying Israelites had one job: look and live.
