As weird as it may sound, I genuinely don’t think Kamo State is exceptionally brilliant at anything. To me, he’s a product of grace and relentless consistency, building success from content many would consider "mediocre".

And what's with the cigarette gimmick? She spends half the film holding a cigarette she never even lights. If it’s symbolic, the screenplay never earns or explains it. Just aesthetic I guess?

❌ What Doesn’t Work

1. The opening conflict feels written, not lived.

Melina randomly inserting herself into Muna and Oli’s conversation just to announce she’s an atheist doesn’t feel organic. It feels like the screenplay rushing to establish its central conflict instead of letting it emerge naturally.

2. Coincidence replaces storytelling.

The screenplay repeatedly relies on convenient events to force the romance:

Melina gets invited to Oli’s house.
She accidentally leaves with Muna’s phone.
Oli just happens to be the one returning it.
Arsenal conveniently happens to be playing.
They’re suddenly close enough to become lovers.

One coincidence is believable. A chain of them starts to feel like lazy writing. The plot pushes the characters together instead of allowing their choices to.

3. The romance skips its most important chapter.

The jump from strangers to sex happens before the emotional foundation is fully built. The attraction is understandable, but the relationship never earns the intimacy.

4. Oli’s fall feels too convenient. For someone on the verge of priesthood, the screenplay reduces such a life-altering decision to a surprisingly cheap situationship. The emotional and spiritual struggle needed far more weight before crossing that line.

5. The mother’s final scene feels like a plot device.

Predicting her death, Oli’s reaction, his departure, and his return a year later doesn’t feel emotionally authentic—it feels like the screenplay revealing its outline through a character. It’s asking the audience to accept too much with too little justification.

Premise: 9/10 — A genuinely compelling idea.

Characters: 8/10 — Strong internal conflicts with emotional potential.

Plot Progression: 2/10 — Overly dependent on convenient coincidences.

Dialogue & Setup: 2/10 — Too often sounds like the writer explaining the story instead of people naturally interacting.

Final Thoughts

The story’s biggest problem isn’t the premise—it’s the plotting. It keeps choosing convenience over causality. Replace coincidences with meaningful character decisions, and the emotional payoff becomes far more believable. As it stands, the screenplay feels less like life unfolding and more like a writer constantly moving pieces across a board.

✅ What works

1. The central conflict

A devout man falls for an atheist while pursuing the priesthood.
That’s a naturally compelling conflict.

2. Opposing worldviews

Faith vs. skepticism creates built-in tension.
Good foundation for character development.

3. Arsenal connection

This is a much more believable bonding moment than another philosophy debate.
It humanizes them.

4. OLI blaming Melina

It’s irrational, but believable. Grieving people often look for someone to blame.

5. The mother’s prophecy

If your film has spiritual undertones, it’s a memorable emotional beat.

Fisayo Amodemaja — 3/10

This role demanded emotional intensity, vulnerability and fear. Unfortunately, she wasn’t ready for that challenge. The performance felt inexperienced, and in a film this heavy, that weakness became impossible to ignore. There’s potential, but this wasn’t the role to convince me.

Performances

Jide Awobona as Gbade — 7.9/10

No surprises here. Jide Awobona once again proves why he’s one of Nollywood’s most dependable actors. He brings conviction to every scene and makes even the film’s more questionable moments feel believable. His performance is easily the strongest in the film.

Ikunle – Story Review

Judging the story alone (separate from the performances and technical execution), Ikunle is built around a compelling question: How far can someone go for the one thing they desperately want? That moral dilemma is easily the story’s biggest strength.

Unfortunately, the screenplay doesn’t always trust that idea. Instead, it leans on a few narrative choices that stretch credibility and dilute the psychological tension it spends so much time building.

There’s a solid psychological thriller at its core, but it needed tighter plotting and more disciplined writing to fully deliver.

This character performance lacked consistency. One minute she’s fully immersed in the character; the next, she’s reminding you you’re watching someone act. Those highs and lows made it difficult to stay emotionally invested in her throughout the film.

WHAT DIDN'T WORK?

My biggest issue with Ikunle is that it falls into one of Nollywood’s oldest habits: telling instead of showing. Some of the story’s most important moments, the couple’s younger years, the failed abortion, how the destitute woman was lured into the house, even her own backstory, are mostly delivered through exposition. These are moments the audience should experience, not simply be told about.

Another issue I had was with the husband’s character progression. Early on, he’s presented as a fiercely protective husband, so protective that he throws his own mother out for questioning his wife about their inability to have children. It’s a powerful introduction.

But not long after, that same man is orchestrating a kidnapping and repeatedly assaulting a woman. That’s an enormous psychological leap, and I don’t think the screenplay spends enough time bridging that gap. The destination isn’t the problem, the journey is. I needed to see the obsession consume him gradually, not feel like he became a different person because the plot required it.

The plot is also far too convenient for the husband. He keeps a woman captive for over nine months, gets her pregnant, brings her back after an escape attempt, and somehow encounters almost no meaningful obstacles. The story rarely pushes back against his plan, and that drains the tension. A thriller thrives on complications, not convenience.

I also struggled with the wife’s moral arc. She’s aware of the plan from the start and even stays after repeated assaults on the captive. Yet her breaking point only comes when the husband decides to perform a self-taught C-section. The intention is clear, but I don’t think the screenplay does enough to earn that shift emotionally.

Finally, the climax feels manufactured. After being struck with a rod, the husband somehow appears in front of their car moments later. It’s a striking visual, but it feels designed for the cinematic image rather than the story’s internal logic. The shot is memorable, the reasoning behind it isn’t.
