The problems associated with diamond mining

The owners of diamond mines are consistently joining with local and national governments to find diamonds and these activities are violating Indigenous people's rights and their traditional homelands.

Diamonds are used to create jewelry and have a high-end industry. Commercial mining began in South Africa in 1866 after massive diamond deposits were found there. Since then the demand for diamonds has increased and mining companies have expanded.

Who is Berta Caceres?

Berta Caceres is an Indigenous Lenca leader. She is the co-founder of COPINH. She spent the entirety of her life devoted to fighting for social struggles and injustices. The organization she co-founded dedicates its efforts to fight for Indigenous rights.
