🎙️ Luka Modrić on VAR and the penalty decision:
"We deserved much more. Some things didn't go our way. If the situation had been reversed, VAR would never have intervened.
I said from the beginning, when VAR was introduced, that I didn't like it. It's useful for some things, but it's being used incorrectly or selectively. VAR should only intervene if it's a 200% clear mistake.
Today's incident was never a penalty. They were both holding each other and both fell. You can't decide a match like this with a penalty like that."
🐐 If this is the end.
Thank you, Captain, for inspiring every single Croat. Thank you for bringing us SO close to glory multiple times. Thank you for proving everybody who doubted you wrong.
You are the best Croatian player to ever touch a football.
Josip Stanišić after Croatia’s 2-1 defeat to Portugal:
"I honestly don't know what to say. We weren't lucky, and in the first half we weren't the team we know we can be. It's difficult to play against a team like that when you know how much quality they have.
The first half was okay, but we were better in the second. Still, we conceded two silly goals. We had our chances too, but luck wasn't on our side today.
There were a few situations where the referee could have made decisions in our favour, but he didn't. We're disappointed, and I don't know what else to say. Small details decide these games, sometimes it's offside, sometimes it isn't.
We conceded two silly goals: a penalty and a cross that we could have defended better. In previous World Cups we've had quite a bit of luck as well, and we have to admit that. Today, luck simply wasn't on our side."
Today's loss marks the beginning of a new era for Croatia.
Big changes are coming, but I'm not afraid of what's ahead. I never have been.
A new generation of talented players is on the horizon, and I'm confident Croatia will continue to compete at the highest level.
🎙️ Luka Modrić on the next opponent, Portugal:
"They are a phenomenal, great team. We will fight and give everything. I didn’t have a preference for who we would get.
It certainly won’t be comfortable for them to see us on the other side either. We have nothing to fear - we need to give maximum and see what happens."
Petar Sučić on his goal celebration:
"My wife is pregnant and stayed at home. The goal means a lot to both of us. I scored and dedicated it to her and, God willing, to our future child."
@CroatiaFooty I'll say 3 because it's too difficult. All from their prime in 2018. Rakitić, Vrsaljko, and Rebić. All underrated during that run. Especially Vrsaljko. Before his knee injury he was amazing in both offensive and defensive phases
@tramryder@CroatiaFooty Yes exactly! And that way, we keep everyone in their natural positions. Yeah, we have not enough wingers and outside backs for sure.
"It's incredible what I have experienced - and still am experiencing - in #Croatia shirt"

@MaestrosCaliber@CroatianSoccer It doesn't matter if Panama beats England because our head to head against Panama is that we beat them so Panama is already eliminated and will be in 4th place no matter what. The only thing would be if we lose badly to Ghana and our goal differential is bad then we may not go on
@TheCroatian_ Apologize I meant to say taking Mario out and putting in Marco. Stanišić just moves back and that gives us a back 4. So Gvardiol - Vušković - Šutalo - Stanišić at the back, Modric - P. Sučić in the middle Perišić - Baturina - Marco attacking and Musa striker. That's best for me.
@TheCroatian_ Not sure if I trust this. The "rumors" were that we were going to play a 4-5-1 for England and that didn't happen. We do need to change to a back 4, I think that's obvious. The lineup shouldn't change except maybe taking out Mario and putting in a defender
Šime Vrsaljko after Croatia's loss to England:
“I don’t see any point in generalizing and drawing conclusions about what kind of national team we are after one match, one defeat.
Over the years, we’ve become used to always beating the big national teams, but it’s not realistic to expect that every time. And now, after losing one match, everyone immediately turns against the team. Of course, there’s nothing positive about losing, but what matters is what happens at the end, the final outcome. Then we’ll judge, analyze, and draw conclusions. Right now, it’s too early for that. We had some gaps and mistakes that cost us goals. They made the most of their periods of really good play and created plenty of chances, while we failed to convert some of our own good moments.
I’m encouraged by the performances of the younger players, who are a real asset to this national team. You’re not even aware of how important it is for such young guys to have examples around them of how to work, how to represent the national team, and how much that helps. They’re already excellent players, and I’m sure they’ll be even better in the future.
Besides, there’s no drama. OK, you lost the first match, but there are still two left and there’s no reason to panic. In tournaments before, after some poorer performances, we managed to take the positives from them because that’s what pushes you forward.” [tportal]
