Why do we keep holding our bleeding bags even when told to sell and f*ck off?

Let’s be honest. Despite being down only, a lot of us are still stuck with our $S bags.

Price action has been terrible, and Sonic leadership is inconsistent (to put it mildly): loose commitments, announcements of announcements, last-minute changes of plan, radio silence when the community panics and the list goes on.

And yet, most of us keep finding reasons to hold and believe.

Why is that? Why do we let that big fist glide deeper and deeper? 🤜🍩

It’s psychology.

🧠 SUNK-COST FALLACY

We’ve already invested time, money and effort. Our brains hate admitting loss, so instead of cutting and moving on, we double down: "If I just hold a little longer, maybe it will come back."

Evolution wired our brains to avoid admitting mistakes, because mistake = failure = loss of reputation (in our imaginary tribe) = diminishing chances of survival and replication.

🧠 COMMITMENT BIAS

People support their past ideas even when presented with evidence that they’re wrong.

FTM had great tech and an incredible run. Sonic has the best tech and hence it will have an even more incredible run. That's what we'd like to believe.

Now, let's look at the facts. We're in a bull market, our competitors are reaching ATHs and is bleeding since February. Yet we still convince ourselves that "our time will come, FTM/Sonic was always the last to moon." Why does it happen?

Ultimately, it’s all about status. We try to convince ourselves, because when we convince ourselves it’s easier to convince others. To convince of what? That we’re rational decision-makers and that we’re right.

We justify our behaviours to save face, i.e., to preserve our status. Bag-holding is, deep down, from an evolutionary perspective, about being part of a tribe and climbing the ladder in that tribe... by being right.

🧠 STOCKHOLM SYNDROME

When leadership ignores us, blocks critics or goes silent, weirdly we find justifications for their toxic behaviour, like hostages empathizing with captors.

We tell ourselves: "They must have a good reason. Andre will return. He’s cooking. The silence is strategy."

Our brain bends reality to avoid the pain of rejection and betrayal. Despite Soniclabs being some dudes on the internet, just like you and I, for our brain it’s like we’re part of a tribe. And when the top dogs call you "poor" or tell you to "sell and f*ck off," it feels like rejection and betrayal. Our brain hates that feeling and does mental gymnastics to reduce it.

Again, rejection = lower status = diminishing chances of survival and replication, hence that terrible feeling.

🧠 TRIBAL LOYALTY

Humans are wired for group belonging. "Don’t marry your bags" is easier said than done. Crypto isn’t just about money, it’s about belonging. Even the ones who don’t marry their bags, are proudly part of the tribe "that doesn’t marry its bags".

When Sonic pumps even 10%, dopamine floods in. We celebrate together, months of pain forgotten and start bull-posting like nothing happened.

But when the chart bleeds? The same wiring kicks in. We don’t leave, we huddle tighter, bond over shared frustration and look for scapegoats (Andre, Matt, Wintermute, SEC, SonicSVM, etc.).

That’s our inner caveman: stick with the tribe in feast and famine, even if the chief is a genius with a fragile ego.

So…

WHAT SHOULD WE DO? 🤔

Alas, I have no good answer for you, because I’m in the same boat.

Acknowledging the addiction doesn’t cure it. Similarly, being aware of those biases doesn’t neutralize their effect.

What has occasionally worked is… selling. (I say "occasionally" because when you’re part of a cult, stepping out of it is super difficult.)

The little voice in your head: "I know I should sell, but when I sell I’m afraid it will pump!"

Solution: sell a little bit, just to desensitize your brain. The next sell will be easier.

However, for some folks the pain must reach unbearable levels before their brain screams: "Your survival matters more than belonging to that stupid tribe on TG, Twitter and Discord. Keep holding and you’ll end up totally broke and then you’ll die lonely, unloved and despised!" Only then will they wake up and realize "F#%k, I made a mistake. I should’ve sold earlier."

And the really f#ck3d-up part is that when you reach that level of pain, you very likely sell… the bottom.
