Meet this gorgeous Purple Pincher — a native Florida Keys land hermit crab that can live 40+ years. They aren’t born with shells. As they grow they have to keep finding larger empty ones, and a serious shell shortage is making that harder every year.

This little hermit crab SWITCHED shells while I was HOLDING HIM!!!!!
We were at Curry Hammock State Park for the Junior Rangers Jamboree and showing the Park Rangers a hermit crab I found in a broken shell. I set another little shell in my hand while we were talking and this little guy started to switch.
