NIDCOM Joins FGN Delegation to Welcome First Batch of 262 Nigerians Evacuated from South Africa
Fully Funded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu

Abuja, 11th June 2026

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) joined a high-powered Federal Government delegation to welcome the safe arrival of the first batch of 262 Nigerian nationals evacuated from South Africa today. The returnees comprised 258 evacuees and 4 officials.

On the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, who approved and fully funded the Air Peace evacuation flight, the returnees were airlifted from OR Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, to Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. They touched down safely at approximately 10:15 a.m.

The returnees were warmly received by a high-powered Federal Government delegation led by the Honourable Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Bernard M. Doro, and the Honourable Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Amb. Sola Enikanolaiye, alongside officials from the Refugee Commission, NEMA, Nigeria Immigration Service, and Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, OON, Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM.

Speaking at the reception, Hon. Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, OON, Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM, thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his swift intervention and commended the collaborative efforts of all agencies involved.
“President Tinubu has once again demonstrated exemplary leadership by ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind in times of distress. We are deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of our brothers and sisters in South Africa and stand ready to support these returnees as they resettle and rebuild their lives,” she stated.

The NIDCOM Chairman further announced the following support packages:
Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State has approved ₦1,000,000 for each Imo State indigene among the returnees.

MTN Nigeria donated ₦100,000 per returnee, to be transferred to their accounts, as well as free airtime worth ₦50,000.

Cruxstone provided cash support to the returnees.
NIMC was on hand to fast-track the issuance of National Identity Numbers (NIN) to all evacuees.

NEMA provided transportation to their various states of origin.
The returnees underwent mandatory documentation and profiling at the airport.

The returnees expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, officials of the Nigerian Missions in Pretoria and Johannesburg, the Federal Government delegation, and organisations such as MTN and Cruxstone.

Imo State indigenes among them also expressed special appreciation to Governor Hope Uzodinma.
