Fractals a Scam?!?!?!
Nah, that’s cheap clickbait. But here is my current POV about the state of the ecosystem.
A few weeks ago, I posted a positive tweet about Fractals, but let’s be real—that was more about clinging to some hopium for a silver lining in the runes space.
Let’s get real:
The Bitcoin ecosystem feels kinda weird right now. We’ve got factions battling it out:
Bitcoin Fractals/BRC20 on one side and Runes on the other (plus the OP_NET guys floating somewhere in between).
Attention is split, volume is divided, which is disastrous given how low it already is. The timeline is full of FUD from both sides.
In such a small space like the Bitcoin asset world, we should be rallying behind ONE asset to make onboarding smoother for newcomers.
Unfortunately, that’s not happening, largely due to the bag biases of different factions. (Yeah, I’m a Runes maxi too and not a fan of BRC20 as the main Bitcoin ‘shitcoin,’ but my issue lies with the lack of trading flexibility—you’re forced to re-inscribe, unlike Runes where you at least have the option to split without being compelled to.)
Smart traders are gonna follow the swinging $$$ and trade without emotional bag biases—narratives are narratives; trade them without getting caught up in emotions.
Are Runes dead? No future? Will Fractals/BRC20 replace the hard-to-trade Runes?
What even is Fractal? It’s basically a sidechain with its own proof of work and token. Calling it an L2 is a stretch.
Fractal blocks move faster, speeding up the Bitcoin experience.
It’s a Unisat project, whose recent funding round was led by Binance Labs (and let's be clear, Binance Labs invests in plenty of things that go to zero, too—it’s no promise that they’ll list Fractal on Day 1 or even ever). Still, it's bullish, let’s not downplay that.
Unisat’s main baby was/is BRC20—they made most of their money there. Magic Eden lost the BRC20 war when they shut down their BRC20 marketplace due to listing issues and protocol abuse.
But in the pre-runes/runes meta, Unisat lost the Runes war to Magic Eden, making them the #1 marketplace for trading anything Runes-related.
Runes completely dominated BRC20 volumes since the halving.
Naturally, Unisat, wanting that revenue back, created Fractals to push BRC20 volumes up and draw attention away from Runes. Sure, Unisat announced Fractals for Runes too, but do you really think they’ll release it anytime soon? The moment they do, Runes will gain bullish momentum and start pulling volume and revenue back to Magic Eden. Unisat is gonna milk the Fractal meta for their BRC20s and gatekeep Runes for as long as they can.
Also, just a heads up: most of the Fractal shillers are Unisat or Unisat-related products ambassadors. They’ve got a clear financial agenda and are being paid by the Fractal developers.
Meanwhile, nobody in the Runes community is getting paid by Casey or anyone similar—they’re just biased because of their Runes bags.
In my opinion, there’s a difference, but maybe not. At the end of the day, both sides are simply biased, of course.
Asian money? Yeah, the Asian market isn’t vibing with Runes:
- Runes’ long tickers/memes aren’t easy for them to rally behind.
- It tanked their huge BRC20 bags.
- Most action is driven by Western traders and influencers. Especially certain Asian traders hate that fact, when they are not in control.
Will they like Fractals and pump money into it? Maybe—especially in the short term to dump on that fomoing exit liquidity.
But let’s be honest, the pre-Fractal meta is already super WEAK. Even the DMT meta had way more juice.
I think Fractals could be great for builders and experimentation purposes, especially for gaming on Bitcoin thanks to those faster blocks.
But trading Fractal BRC20 assets on a daily basis? Short-term there might be some nice money schemes to make $$$, but who’s really gonna want to hold a token on a Bitcoin sidechain? Do you like trading/holding 'shitcoins' on the BNB chain or would you rather stick with ETH? I doubt it.
Mid/Long-term, I don’t see Fractals being that interesting for projects, holders, or degens.
Runes have liquidity problems and struggles with onboarding more users to the protocol.
Here’s why, in my opinion, post-halving:
- FEHU, the #1 inscribed rune, isn’t doing shit—dragging down the whole ‘provenance’ narrative.
- Day 1 of Runes burned traders (especially those from other chains) through frontrunning and inflated market caps, which created a bad first impression.
- Inflated market caps in general.
- Fake holder counts.
- Limited hopium for RUNES protocol updates.
- PVP among bag holders vs. bag hodlers vs. FUDders who missed out—lack of unity in this tiny Runes space is terrible.
I don’t think RUNES are dead or going away to irrelevancy. The mid/long-term aspect of Runes looks way healthier than Fractals/BRC20. Products are being built (yeah, we say this all the time and it feels like nothing’s happening, but it’s true—building on a new protocol takes time).
On that note: Be smart, trade Fractals wisely, don’t fade it like some Rune bagholders, and make good $$$ there. But don’t overinvest.
Also, support builders like @const_quary. He announced on his @Magisat_io platform yesterday:
- No splitting Runes required
- 100% non-custodial
- Charts/TA/Sweep/Order book
These are the products we should be supporting, not just chasing every new Bitcoin protocol meta that pops up.
Now let's make love and slide into my dms with some horny messages.
