The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has charged two founders of Tornado Cash, a cryptocurrency mixer, with conspiring to launder money, violate US sanctions and operate an unlicensed money-transmitting business.
Tornado Cash is a decentralized cryptocurrency mixer that allows users to obscure the origins of their transactions. The DOJ alleges that the founders of Tornado Cash helped launder more than $1 billion in criminal proceeds through the platform.
The charges are the latest development in the US government's crackdown on cryptocurrency mixers. In 2022, the Treasury Department sanctioned Tornado Cash and two other mixers, https://t.co/kk8Wjxas9K and https://t.co/EzUKSPjtRp. The DOJ has also charged several individuals with using cryptocurrency mixers to launder money.
The arrest of the founders of Tornado Cash is a significant development in the fight against cryptocurrency-related money laundering. It sends a message to the cryptocurrency community that the US government is serious about cracking down on this activity. It also raises questions about the future of cryptocurrency mixers, which are often used by criminals to obscure the origins of their transactions.
