Announcing Ethlabs: a non-profit R&D lab for Ethereum and ETH
Our mission is to make Ethereum the settlement layer of the global economy.
The internet became global because shared protocols created a common language between networks. Private systems remained useful, but bounded. Finance is approaching a similar moment. As value, assets, and markets become digital, the world needs shared settlement infrastructure.
Ethereum is uniquely positioned to become that shared base layer, the neutral foundation on which users, institutions, and agents can transact without intermediation.
What we believe:
• We believe credible neutrality matters. Ten years of uptime and the lowest counterparty risk. Ground that cannot be pulled away by any one country, institution, company, or person.
• We believe ETH matters. The most valuable, programmable store of value. A decade of broad distribution, deep liquidity in onchain markets, and maximally trustless asset on Ethereum.
• We believe DeFi matters. Markets, liquidity, credit, exchange, and coordination, open to anyone.
• We believe adoption matters. Principles do not change the world until people benefit from them.
We sit between two worlds: real usage from the builders at the frontier, and the protocol that has to support it. We work with users, applications, wallets, L2s, infrastructure teams, institutions, ETH holders, core devs and researchers, then turn what they actually need into protocol work, shared standards, infrastructure, and shipped products.
Ethlabs is independent but Ethereum is a shared project. We are one node in a much larger network of stewards. This is the multi-node future.
We have spent the better part of the past decade contributing to Ethereum core research and development.
We are opinionated and transparent. We move with urgency, learn in public, and course-correct when we’re wrong.
We are building a lean, talent-dense team for people who want to do the most important work of their careers: [email protected]
Bitcoin was doomed from the start as it requires a centrally controlled exchange to convert between it and any other asset / fiat.
Ethereum is in the awkward years where it has proven itself capable, but doesn’t have the size & adoption of legacy markets. FTX & Gensler set us back a decade. Now we need CLARITY.
We need to put pressure on legislators and regulators to update laws and guidelines that publicly audited balances and transactions must use blockchains with CROPS. Independent audits aren’t enough anymore, corporations and even banks have gone bust too many times with this model.
Everyone is hating on Ethereum, but the truth is that everything else is draining funds from crypto industry.
BTC with its massively expensive PoW, draining about $30M per day just to operate a structurally inferior store of value when compared to ETH.
Other L1s are musical chairs for pseudo fundamentals, cycling through narratives that are not PMF, were never PMF, and probably never will be.
All the ICO, NFT, tokenization manias that pushed for even more speculation, but in reality are the most extractive casinos in existence, and "investments" just end up funding lavish lifestyles.
Long story short... the money is rotating from "investors" into wasteful PoW and extractive coins/tokens with manufactured fundamentals.
Ethereum is the only thing that has lasting value and that is structured to actually deliver PMF services and products, but 99% of retards in this space would like you to believe it's the most problematic network.
The way to save Ethereum: The community needs to create an organization that's economically aligned with Ethereum and accountable to it.
The EF now holds less than 0.1% of all ETH. There is no flow of Ethereum staking or fee revenues to it.
If we want to get Ethereum back to winning:
- create an organisation with credible funding, minimum $1b as a start. That's very reasonable for an ecosystem with $250b market cap
- find a leader who is competent and wants to fight
- make it accountable: a board of people who want ETH to go up, and a charter that holds the org accountable to it
- fund it permanently: A significant amount of staking revenue needs to go to it. A governance mechanism that can adjust it (also part of accountability).
Very hard to imagine now, but I think this is the only way (and it will probably happen, but it might take a long time before it is consensus).
@VitalikButerin@lex_node So get the EF to make an ETH@Home reference node implementation and back it with the kind of support you’d expect from the likes of Apple or Google. Instead of sitting around waiting for the industry to fill the void, set the bar and make them partner up or compete.
EF, last year: Hey, we want to listen to you users to make Ethereum better.
EF, now: Jk, we looked at the real world. We don't like building for it after all, we'll go back to building cypherpunk stuff only.
This is the EF going back to its old ways, undoing the changes from last year. I have feared this would happen because Vitalik clearly wasn't in with his heart.
But whatever they say about the "ecosystem" being able to take care of this, the fundamental problems remain:
- there are very few voices in ACD caring about real world Ethereum usage
- there is nobody doing Ethereum BD (everyone else who is doing this also has their own separate interests)
Boasting altruistic virtues as the main focus of EF is what drives potential adopters to look elsewhere. They want implementation support for real world products that MAKE MONEY!
Ethereum will fail without AGGRESSIVE business development, and at that point nothing else will matter.
