You’re shocked by Poland rejecting the €44 bn SAFE funds? I’m shocked that anyone still believes this is “cheap European money” for our defense industry. Let me remind you what actually happened to Greece – the exact same playbook Germany and France used, which they conveniently never mention when pushing SAFE.
2000–2010: Greece became one of the world’s top arms importers (4th–5th place globally). Main suppliers? Germany and France.

German Type 214 submarines, Leopard 2 tanks, PzH 2000 howitzers – paid with export credits guaranteed by Hermes (Germany) and COFACE (France).
French Mirage 2000 fighters and more – same story.
Part of it was straight budget, part was “deferred payments” and leasing. Defense spending? 3.5–4.5 % of GDP – exactly where Poland is now.

Greece didn’t have cash, so it borrowed. Those “generous” European guarantees let Athens borrow cheaply… until they didn’t. The debt exploded. During the 2010 bailout negotiations, Berlin and Paris openly conditioned new rescue packages on Greece continuing or signing new arms contracts. Corruption scandals followed (Ferrostaal alone admitted €100–120 m in bribes to Greek officials). One submarine was defective. Contracts were renegotiated. Greece still paid.
Result?

Real GDP collapsed ~25 %.
Unemployment hit 27–28 % (youth >60 %).
Mass emigration, brain drain, poverty, lost generation.
Debt/GDP soared from ~127 % to over 200 %.

Germany and France sold the weapons, collected the money, then lectured Greece about “living beyond its means.” Someone had to buy their tanks and subs, right?
This is precisely what SAFE is designed to replicate – not “strengthen Polish industry,” but recycle EU (mainly German-French) money back into their own defense giants via credits and tied purchases. Preferring direct US contracts (even with current delays) or building real Polish capacity without the debt trap is not “self-destructive”.
