Killing The CLARITY Act Won't Save Community Banks
Senator Cynthia Lummis (@SenLummis) is pushing back on claims that stablecoins tied to the CLARITY Act are driving deposits out of community banks.
She cites BofA data showing household deposits rising across income groups this year. The FDIC also reports domestic deposits growing for a seventh straight quarter, per Lummis.
Lummis argues Section 404 of the CLARITY Act bars stablecoin issuers from paying anything resembling interest, even disguised as rewards. It also bans marketing stablecoins as deposits or FDIC insured.
She calls the bill stricter than current law, despite pushback from community banks.
Lummis warns that scrapping the CLARITY Act would not protect community banks, only preserve a broken status quo. She points to bank consolidation, not stablecoins, as the real long term threat.
