In November 1967, Jocelyn Bell was surveying the sky with the Interplanetary Scintillation Array in Cambridge, when she picked up a pulsating signal with a period of 1.3373 seconds.

The power and regularity of the signals were briefly thought to resemble an extraterrestrial beacon, leading the source to be nicknamed LGM, later LGM-1 (for "little green men"). It was actually a pulsar, later classified as PSR B1919+21.
