3 years ago on this same week, two events changed my life.

The first was the passing of my mom who left us unexpectedly after two decades battling scleroderma, a ruthless, rare autoimmune disease. The evening before, I missed a call from her and put off dialling back, thinking I could ring her in the morning… I couldn’t have been more wrong. Regular reminder to call and tell your parents you love them.

The second event happened on the same day. It was also my first day full-time at Treasure. This followed months as a community member and contributor to the DAO (Treasure Tools!). It was the magic of the ecosystem that led me to leave something great so I could build something even greater: the decentralized Nintendo. In spite of everything that happened with my mom, Treasure became not just my baby but also my refuge that I channeled everything into — blood, sweat, and tears. Not too long after that, I became a late co-founder alongside John to serve and grow the Treasure ecosystem.

Looking back over the past three years, I am immensely proud of how far Treasure has come to become a force within the space. Everything that has been built. The crew of talented, world-class humans that we assembled. The cast of developers and builders creating the next generation of games. The work we’ve done with our partners to drive growth, innovation, and success. The community who have always believed in the magic. 2024 was a landmark year with the launch of Treasure chain, studios that have been long building now beginning to see the fruits of their labour, hundreds of thousands of players across our games, and much, much more.

Despite the current macro environment, the future is bright. We've been through market cycles like this before. This time however, what's coming next is a Cambrian explosion in the confluence of crypto, AI, and entertainment. And Treasure has all of the necessary ingredients to seize the opportunity as it continues its mission of building a living cinematic universe. Original cryptonative IP, a blossoming gaming ecosystem, and pioneering AI infrastructure — a winning combination. This builds upon the original vision for game interoperability and a connected network of game worlds, all while embracing emerging technologies like AI and creating more pathways for value accrual to MAGIC.

In order to better execute on this sharpened focus, a difficult decision was made in the past few weeks to reduce the size of the core team. This was not a reaction to market conditions, but to best position Treasure for accelerated growth in 2025 and beyond. It is a return to the same dynamism, energy, and scrappiness of the early days of Treasure. Shipping furiously, less inertia, and better team cohesion. An announcement further detailing this and the renewed roadmap will follow. For all who have departed, I am deeply grateful for the mark you've made, not only to Treasure but also to myself personally. Thank you.

It is with a heavy heart to also announce that I will be stepping away from Treasure.

John Patten (@smoldev__) has assumed leadership of the core team to drive towards the future of Treasure. As the project’s original founder from the very beginning in September 2021, John has always driven Treasure’s overarching direction on its pursuit to build interconnected worlds as part of a living cinematic universe. Some of Treasure’s greatest times were experienced prior to my arrival in 2022: the early writings, whitepaper, and ideas that catalyzed the community, MAGIC’s initial farm, the Smol Brains free mint, and the electrifying launch and success of Bridgeworld. Armed with the foundation that has been built over the years, John is well positioned to lead Treasure to its next frontier, while bringing the early energy and magic.

Presented to the core team last week, this decision to step away follows many months of discussion and mutual agreement on the type of leadership needed for the next chapter of Treasure and to drive renewed interest in MAGIC. As a fair launch project that formed from the community, the founding team came together in an untraditional way. As founders, John and I could not be more different, which I have always seen to be a tremendous superpower. Despite our best efforts however, we have not been able to arrive at full alignment on vision, approach, and values. Regardless, I will always remain a champion of Treasure and its ecosystem, and will continue to serve as a strategic advisor to the core team and builders.

Over the coming months, I plan to take some much-needed time to reflect and recharge. March has always been a difficult month for me. Losing my mother has never been something I have taken time to deal with and heal from. It's finally time.

As a gamer through and through, I look forward to having a bit more bandwidth to play Treasure games. As a Canadian, I feel a profound pull and urgency to be more present in my own backyard. And as a husband, I have a duty and responsibility to set up for our next stage of life as a family.

For the time being, I will continue supporting the ecosystem and figuring out what’s next.

These economic incentives will help align players with games. And they are coming.
