Africa Thesis Award 2026

The Africa Thesis Award is an annual competition organized by the African Studies Centre Leiden and Brill to recognize outstanding master's theses on African topics.
Award
€500 cash prize
Winning thesis is published in the Afrika-Studiecentrum Series

Eligibility
- Master's thesis completed between 31 August 2025 and 31 August 2026
- Submitted at a university in Africa or The Netherlands
- Focus on an African country, region, or diaspora
- Based on empirical research in Social Sciences or Humanities
- Minimum grade of 8/10 (or equivalent A grade)
- Written in English, French, or Dutch

Selection Criteria
- Originality of research
Strength of theory and methodology
- Scientific and societal relevance
- Quality of writing and readability

Application Requirements
- PDF copy of thesis
- 300-word summary
- Supervisor recommendation letter confirming quality and grade
- Additional 5-page English summary if the thesis is in Dutch

Deadline: 30 September 2026
