Knumps are seldom seen without a conjurer by their side, but when they roam independently, they are often found leading a patrol of unbound Squmpers, dutifully guarding the outskirts of towns and villages. More commonly, they serve as steadfast companions to veteran militia conjurers, originally issued as standard Squmpers upon the completion of their rigorous training.
Like many synthetic crytures, Knumps are highly customizable, a trait that conjurers eagerly embrace. They often bear intricate carvings or paintings, each marking an allegiance, a celebrated victory, or a tribute to the bond shared between cryture and conjurer.
A Blade cryture excels in dishing out damage in melee and building momentum for future attacks.
Their Deep Cut power is the standard attack, giving them a chance to Wound an enemy with each attack.
Squmpers owe their creation to the rudimentary knowledge of early artificers, gleaned from the tattered manuscripts of the ancients. Lacking the means to fully animate unliving material, they found their breakthrough in the use of a freshly hewn tree stump as the main body.
Since then, Squmpers have been used as the primary defense of settlements and cities from the dangerous crytures that roam the wilds. For a time, they were also used in law enforcement, but the sheer power of a cryture proved excessive and impractical for managing ordinary humans.
A Stone cryture has access to a wide variety of powers that lets them adapt to many tactical situations.
With Stone Toss, the cryture can attack from range while still using its Strength stat.
Magmants are consummate nest builders, and are often found working in mated pairs. As one burrows out a cavernous lair, their partner clears rubble from behind, often bearing much greater loads than their size would suggest is possible.
Along the way, they will populate the lair with edible subcrytures for their own offspring, or in hopes of attracting their younger kin to guard the lair. Once Glarvas and Ignalis settle in, they expand the lair with meandering tunnels, as they chew through the stone indiscriminately.
The Quake class gives a cryture the ability to strike at multiple enemies at once in close range.
The Tremble power, lets the cryture hit adjacent enemies while gaining a damage boost simultaneously.
An Ignalis spends much of its existence in a state of torpor, during which the luminous sections of its body fade entirely, rendering it nearly indistinguishable from the surrounding stone. This camouflage is especially effective in the dim recesses of caves where it resides, making life difficult for predators who try to feast on their younger, more visible kin.
Keenly adapted to its idle lifestyle, an Ignalis possesses a mouth located at the base of its body, allowing it to feed continuously on the minerals in the stone beneath it, even when at rest.
Striking hard and fast is the singular focus of the Flametongue class.
Their primary attack is Burning Bite, which can wound with a single lucky crit, setting up ongoing damage every turn.
This subterranean cryture spends much of its existence in an insatiable search for sustenance. A Glarva's heated core demands constant fuel, causing it to devour nearly anything in its path, including stone and minerals, to fuel its growth toward metamorphosis.
Voracious packs of Glarva have been known to tunnel through miles of rock, and when food is scarce, their relentless hunger sometimes drives them to breach human mine shafts, creating unexpected dangers.
The Monk class is all about pumping out consistent damage.
The paragon power, Singular Focus, can additionally toughen up the cryture for extra survivability.
Legends claim these crytures were forged from the molten heart of a volcano, their essence imbued with the spirit of fire. Tortikis engage in elaborate displays of fiery theatrics, combining dazzling pyrotechnics with rhythmic dances, either to court potential mates or to establish dominance among their fiery kin.
When their younger relatives gather for celebratory pyres, Tortikis skillfully manage the flames to prevent uncontrolled blazes while warding off any crytures that dare to intrude upon their searing festivities.
An Inferno cryture can rain down damage across a wide swathe of the battlefield.
The basic attack, Fireburst, can hit several enemies at once, turn after turn.
These stout humanoid Crytures are best known for their erratic dances, often accompanied by the dramatic burning of twigs, branches, or other flammable objects held aloft like torches. Magi speculate that this behavior serves as a complex form of communication, though its meaning eludes them.
Torungas frequently gather in large groups, hosting chaotic and fiery celebrations that leave trails of scorched vegetation in their wake. Such gatherings inspire fear in most other Crytures, prompting them to aggressively expel Torungas or Torkish from their territories to prevent potential devastation.
The Ignition class is all about pumping up damage output and inflicting ongoing damage on enemies.
If you want a sure-fire way to inflict the Wounded status, Blazing Missiles can reliably burn several enemies in one shot.
These small, flaming beings possess a stony feel to their skin, as if sculpted from the stone itself. Torkish are notorious for gathering in rowdy celebrations, dancing and chattering around makeshift bonfires. Such gatherings frequently give rise to wildfires, causing Torkish to be regarded as a dangerous pest, even by other crytures.
While Torkish are native to the tropical Burning Isles to the south, Archmage Lucas Loric brought some of them back to Rootrun after an expedition. Here, they are used as entry-level crytures for conjurers in the League of Magi.
A Vortex cryture combines mobility with forced movement to harass enemies or tie them up in melee.
Whirling Charge lets the cryture blitz through enemy lines, leaving them in disarray.
While Majestrix rarely get directly involved with the flocks of their younger kin, they always seem to keep a watchful eye out for them. These crytures prefer to spend their time gazing at the starry sky from the highest points of the canopy while their gleaming halos act as a beacon to ward off rivals and comfort friends.
Some conjurers suggest that a Majestrix can read signs and portents in the stars, giving it insights into the movements of other cryture packs in the area. When the stars align and they do need to get involved, a Majestrix leads its flock from above, beaming directives to them by flickering the light of its halo.
A Paladin cryture channels celestial power to support allies with restoration and buffs while keeping foes at bay.
Gleaming Smite gives the Paladin a bonus attack die, which also gives it an extra chance to inflict the Distracted status on a crit.
Using their halo of glowing feathers, Astrowls have developed further tactics to confound and confuse both prey and predator. In the darkness of night, these points of light can easily be mistaken for multiple crytures, and they liberally use this fact to scare away larger packs of crytures that may be looking for an easy meal.
When they themselves are out hunting, Astrowls will use this ability to trick prey into thinking that a whole flock is coming from one direction, while their younger allies come from the other side to trap them from both sides.
